Wow what a great idea.

Warmly,
Melissa R. Green and Pj
It is 'where we are' that should make all the difference, whether we believe we belong there or not.

Subject: [blparent] upcoming parenting class

Hello all!

I used to be on this list, many years ago when my Kiddo was little. Now he’s all grown up, a high school graduate and working full time. I’m still not sure which is harder: toddler temper tantrums, adolescent independence or watching your adult child get his first apartment.

In the years since I left the list I have worked with youth criminal offenders, taught resiliency skills to young people, volunteered my time to preventing drug/alcohol use for youth, homeschooled my son and I have been teaching parenting classes in my community for a few years now. Recently I had the idea to offer parenting classes by phone conference to blind parents. I don’t think blind parents need a separate, special class, but I also know that blindness presents unique challenges, often related to negative attitudes about blindness. I thought a parenting class with only blind parents would allow the opportunity to talk freely and openly without judgment about blindness.

Here’s the class announcement!

***

The Love and Logic parenting class is starting next week! If you want to participate, please email me at: julielj at neb.rr.com right away.

I am offering two sessions via phone conference, Tuesday afternoons beginning at 1 pm central time and again on Thursday evening starting at 6 pm central time. Both sessions will be identical each week. You can attend either or both if you like. The entire list of dates is below.

The class meets once a week for six weeks. Each of those sessions will last about 1.5 hours. There will also be information for you to read in between class sessions. You will need a reliable phone and the ability to read email in between classes. Everything will be fully accessible. If you need additional accommodations not related to blindness, please let me know and we will work it out.

Session 1: Tuesday August 25 1pm and Thursday August 27 at 6pm

Session 2: Tuesday September 1 at 1 pm and Thursday September 3 at 6pm

Session 3:Tuesday September 8 at 1pm and Thursday September 10 at 6pm

Session 4: Tuesday September 15 at 1pm and Thursday September 17 at 6 pm

Session 5:Tuesday September 22 at 1 pm and Thursday September 24 at 6 pm

Session 6: Tuesday September 29 at 1 pm and Thursday October 1 at 6pm

The cost for the entire class is $25. That cost includes the opportunity to attend all the sessions listed above. If you would like private, individualized coaching support, I offer 3 hours for $25. The coaching can be added at any time, even after the class is over. I accept payment through PayPal. I will send you a payment request after you contact me by email. I will send you the call in number for the class sessions, once I have received payment.

I am a blind parent myself and understand the challenges that brings. I know that to the world we feel pressed to present ourselves and our kiddos like we have it all together. I also know that kids are kids and do kid things. We have the same parenting challenges as every other parent. This class isn't about blindness alternatives for parenting, but about general parenting skills with a blindness perspective.

Love and Logic takes the stress out of parenting. It’s fun, practical, no nonsense tools to help you raise responsible kids, who are happy and well behaved. It’s based on loving, healthy relationships, founded on mutual respect.

If you have questions please email me at julielj at neb.rr.com I am happy to help!

I look forward to the opportunity!

Julie Johnson
