[blparent] Braille Embosser

Jennifer,

What sort of background do you have in preparing braille documents? I don't
want you to make a decision thinking that some of what you want to do is
easy. On the other hand, you may be very familiar with the associated
technology. Generally, you can't just emboss a picture and have it make
much sense. An embossed picture may not look the same to your son as a
printed picture. Still, technology is constantly changing so I am not
saying that what you want is impossible. However, when my kids were young,
it just was not that difficult to put a braille label on print pictures so I
would know what was on the paper. Using blocks and magnetic letters worked
well for me to teach letters. Twin Vision books were also very helpful. I
had an embosser but just never found a reason to try to use it to generate
pictures or raised letters because it was actually easier to use other
approaches.

Also, as you probably know but I don't want to assume, you will need some
kind of braille translation program. Bills that you scan will need some
reformatting to come out right in braille . I find some of this kind of
work to be an interesting challenge, but not everyone does. The point is
that you are not going to be able to scan and braille a bill without some
intervention. Some bills may braille without formatting in a way that they
can be understood even if they are not nicely formatted, but it isn't
something you can count on. Some embossers come with translation software
and others do not.

The important thing is to have your needs defined as you have done, but also
be certain you know what is required to achieve the goals beyond getting the
embosser so you can choose wisely and prioritize your needs. This is not
meant to talk you out of anything, just to provide some additional input.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Rebecca,

I want to be able to print and emboss pictures with letters and numbers to
help my sons learn his letters as well as emboss and have ink on his
homework when he gets older in order help him.
I also want to be able to emboss medical paperwork that as well as emboss
only notes that I need to refer to and bills. I plan to use it to emboss
notes that I take for class for times when we are allowed to use notes, but
I am not allowed to bring in my Braille display since it has the ability to
save work.

Hi I know this is not directly parent related but I'm hoping that someone in
the education field can help me out.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with the Index Everette Braille
embosser?
Pros cons?

Has anyone used the Emprint spot dot by Viewplus?

I thought that using a Braille printer with one sided Braille would meet my
needs but I'm quickly finding that is not the case.

Thank you
