[blparent] Some questions to ask the list

Hi Becky,

I remember you from Michigan. Congrats on having a child! And our kids are
close in age, how nice is that? My daughter, Allyssa, is six months.

One of the best pieces of advice I got was to Google the group Babywaring
International with my city name. Not sure where you live, but BWI may have a
local chapter. They have been a great resource for learning about baby
carriers and how to wear my child while I do other things like walk around
town with my cane. My local group is Babywaring International of Phoenix,
but your city would have a different group name. At their meetings they have
volunteers who are other moms with experience using carriers. They showed me
the different types of carriers, let me touch them, and then helped me learn
how to put them on me and then put my daughter in them. They even have a
lending library so I could borrow a carrier to see which type I liked before
I went out and bought one for myself. Anyway, most babywaring parents are
sighted, but I think babywearing is especially great for blind parents
because wearing babies in carriers leaves our hands free to use our canes or
guide dogs or whatever travel tool you prefer. I've found walking with my
cane with my daughter in a carrier is much easier and pleasant than juggling
a stroller. And using a carrier could help you do a lot more walking for
exercise. You can also safely dance with a baby in a carrier. And believe
me, once your baby starts getting big, you will burn a lot of calories if
you walk or dance while carrying him. My daughter definitely gives me a
workout.

Alternatively, there are Mommy and Me yoga classes that you could try with
your son. These are designed for you to exercise with your baby. I haven't
done this myself yet because I don't have a lot of time, but I've been
meaning to check one out for ages. If you try one before I do, please post
to the list and let us know how it goes.

Best,
Allison

I think it depends a lot on what type of exercise you mean. There are loads
of audio or video programs you can do in your living room. Kiddo could be
taking a nap or hanging out in his car seat or pack and play in the room
with you.

If you want to walk outdoors, a pack carrier of some variety would be my
choice. A stroller could also work, but requires paying close attention to
space and sidewalk cracks.

If you want to go to a gym, I'd probably opt for a sitter. Ditto for a
class. Some gyms do have child care available. I'm not sure about how old
the kids have to be or the quality, but if a gym is what you want to do, it
might be worth checking out the options.
