I can only speak with on a limited standpoint. I did volunteer work at our local YMCA, and there is a family who comes in with several children with different disabilities. There is the option of working with sign language, and having them sign into your hand if they will be willing to do that. sometimes kids are now furnished with devices such as a Toby, and they can use their hand or I gave in order to communicate with the machine which says what they want to say to you. One of the little boys who would come into the YMCA use this device with his eyes. Other than that it has a lot of responding to cues, learning routines, getting to know their personalities.

My question is, how do you communicate if you cannot see with someone who is non-verbal? How do you know what they want? Did any of you as parents learn sign language? If so, how did you do it? Furthermore, if it wasn't your child how would you go about doing physical care for an individual if you had no sight? Thank you all! Daniella.
