[blParent] Thumb sucking how do you stop it?

Some have to just grow out of it. I do not recommend bribing with food though. Then your doctor will start to say at some point the child is overweight. You also could find out what stress is avoidable and try to avoid it. Everyone has their methods of dealing with stress. Not all stress is good either. That is another thing to look at. I personally would worry more about what a dentist says about child's mouth though than your pediatrician. Neither one is always right actually. That type of pressure can also be more stressful for some children and make them do it more.

Tara, is your daughter in preschool? Sometimes peer pressure can help with stuff like this. My younger son, now age 33, sucked his thumb for a long time, not in school or in public. I mentioned it to our dentist at some point and he was amazed as Kevin's teeth showed no evidence of this. Best of luck.

hi all! My daughter is about three now. She has been a thumbsucker ever since she was a baby. She went to the pediatrician for her three your appointment. The pediatrician noticed that the thumb sucking is starting to affect the shape of her mouth and could lead to pretty severe orthodontic problems in the future if my little girl can’t stop it. We have tried working with her on it. We have tried chocolate chips, that works a little bit. We have also tried talking to her about it, which doesn’t seem to work. The more stressed my little girl is the more she sucks her thumb. For example, my in-laws took the family on a trip to San Diego California a couple of weeks ago. Everybody had a good time but it was at times a little bit stressful. During the stressful times my daughter definitely had her thumb in her mouth. Any advice or tips would be great!
Thanks so much!
Tara
