[blParent] Thumb sucking how do you stop it?

I'd agree with you, Dianna. Some things happen in their time. The pediatrician wanted my grandson to get speech therapy because he wasn't talking like they thought he should. My son and daughter-in-law didn't, he has three older half-sisters and talks wonderfully now. And my granddaughter who is now 4 had other issues that concerned me a lot. Again, her parents felt she would grow out of it and she did. She is still shy with strangers but no longer screams when anyone she doesn't know comes near her. And she is the first of all of those 5 kids in that house who ever said to me, "Grandma, how come you can't see?" I said, "I don't know-it just happened." "OK," says Hayley and we went on with what we were doing, but she took my hand as we went into their house. I didn't get to hold or touch her until she was over two so when I did, it was a joy beyond measure, but I made sure I didn't cry in front of her sisters as they would have worried about that. Those three granddaughters may not be my natural ones, but they are wonderful girls and very special to me.

I think the you look like a baby approach is just wrong myself and should never be used. I would never put anything bitter or anything else on my child's or anyone else's child's hand so it can be put in their mouth. The old day stuff was not always right and could in theory cause more harm than the actually thumb issue in my opinion.

Back in the olden days we used to put something very bitter tasting on our children’s thumbs to discourage them from sucking their thumb. We also used to tell our toddlers that they look like a baby when they did it and that also helped

The pediatrician noticed that the thumb sucking is starting to affect the shape of her mouth and could lead to pretty severe orthodontic problems in the future if my little girl can’t stop it. We have tried working with her on it. We have tried chocolate chips, that works a little bit. We have also tried talking to her about it, which doesn’t seem to work. The more stressed my little girl is the more she sucks her thumb. For example, my in-laws took the family on a trip to San Diego California a couple of weeks ago. Everybody had a good time but it was at times a little bit stressful. During the stressful times my daughter definitely had her thumb in her mouth. Any advice or tips would be great!
