Hi Natalie,
Once your little one is born, you can sign up at the below link to get a free book every other month. The books are generally good and have pictures, although many are not board books so may be better for slightly older kids. It can certainly help grow your collection though!

I also believe the American Action Fund gives out free books, but it is my understanding that they don't have pictures which likely makes them of limited interest for very young children.

You can also purchase books from these websites at reasonable cost:

I have brailled a few books myself with adhesive label paper, but I do find the process a bit time-consuming as a full-time working mom so haven't done it much. If you're interested in this route, I'd possibly consider getting some new or used board books and working to braille them before your baby is born and your life becomes total chaos!

I also thought it important to gather a collection of print/braille books early on for my baby and am glad I did. He didn't seem to take much of an interest in them for a while, but I do think that reading to him was beneficial even then. Now at almost 18 months, he loves his large collection of books and often brings his favorites to us to read.

Best,
Alysha

Subject: [blParent] Braille Book Resources for Blind Parents?

Hi All:

I’m wondering if there are any programs for free or low-cost books for blind parents of sighted children? I definitely plan to purchase books from the main Braille children’s books places, but would love to have giant piles of books without going broke. 😊

Thanks in advance for any info.

Sincerely,

Natalie
