And don't forget the phone call from a supposed grandchild who was put in jail for a minor offence but needs money to get out.  I just received notice of a PayPal transaction that I didn't initiate and they gave me two days to let them know if it was not valid.  Well, there is no transaction, and no doubt the resolution link would have taken my PayPal id and password and then I would really have had problems.  One that actually made me laugh was the note that my Outlook account had reached the maximum storage and that I needed to upgrade.  The warning came from a Gmail account.  Did they really think Microsoft would notify me through Gmail?  Still, these are all unsettling to various degrees.

I saw this scam make the rounds last year as well.

I was told I have a niece who is graduating and needed some sort of tech,
something like that.  Totally spam.

This inquiry turned out to be a spam.  It hit all of our lists and some
other listservs as well.  We caught the next email which asked some of you
who said you did order online whether you could help him out by purchasing
Amazon gift cards for him.  He promised he would reimburse you.  It is
possible that someone's email account was compromised, so the name could be
somebody who was subscribed.  In case the same person writes to anybody
directly, please assume that this is not somebody we know even if the name
is familiar to some.
