[Cabs-talk] rumors and reality: cabs election?

Darian a conference call is a good idea. In order for that to work well
first an anouncement needs to be sent explaining exactly which offices are
open.
Than Someone needs to collect names of those who are interested in each
position.
The call needs to be set up at a time when all the candidates can attend and
it should be set up during a time students can attend.
I personally don't like Sunday because I have other committments and often
can't get to meetings held that day especially evening ones.
Saturday or a week night except wednesday usually works better for me.
I don't think a huge rift exists in the division although people have
opinions on how things can and should be done.
I also think though some folks say they don't want to serve with one
candidate or the other many times that too can be worked out.
Sometimes we have disagreements over things and people feel put on the
defensive. For example, and this is just my personal opinion,
I don't have any problem with Bruce Deepa or anyone else and
am happy working with them to the best of my ability.
But I do have a difference of opinion.
During the last few years the student division CABS has financed retreats
for the board members which cost significant amounts of money to fly
 people arround the state.
As a result those moneys weren't spent
doing things like recruiting students and
I think those board meetings could have been held as well via telephone.
In fact the board unity could have been established the same way flying
board
 members to conduct these seminars.
Also in my view the treasury wasn't handled well. When Terra(My wife)
was treasurer she was ask to forge signatures and money was held in
our safe cash money for several months.I think until
February just before the last retreat in fact,

I can definitely say during my administration that wouldn't have been
permitted.
Money needs to be kept in the bank at all times and accounted for
 because we are
at risk of government problems if it's not
not just problems for the CABS but also for the State affiliate NFBC.
Also when someone is keeping several hundred dollars at there house
their is a risk of burglary than what? When terra had that money in our
safe after a few weeks I can tell you it felt scarry,
Presidents of our State affiliate AKA Bob Acosta
prior to our reorganization was taken to task for messing with the cash I
think if I remember he borrowed money to buy a clock for his wife.
  Keeping our
cash in a bank at all times leaves a clear trail no one will borrow a few
bucks
temporarily for a weekend trip to Las Vegas intending to Pay it back.
and, I know all or most of our members are honest
but keeping pillowcases full of cash for months well that's not
professional
 in any circles.
We need to make sure money is placed in an account and when necessary
transferred from bank to bank just like the State affiliate does.
I know signatures are a headache and such
but that is the same for all organizations.
When I was president of the San Fernando valley chapter many years ago a
girlfriend was serving as an officer,
I believe treasure but maybe secretary, it was many years ago.
We broke up she left town and it was a nightmare doing paperwork
but we got it done and the names got changed and I didn't keep physical
cash
 at my house.
I am not suggesting anyone is a bad leader,
I have utmost respect for this administration but we need to be careful how
we r
un the organization and we need to do everything in our power
to educate and recruit students so our voice will be heard as we strive
to improve conditions for blind students pursuing higher education.
Some would like thesee matters kept between board members
but for those aspiring to sit on the board these are some of the issues
 you must address.
The student division is a good training ground and
dealing with these kinds of things enriches your resume when
 you graduate college.
I do not plan on bringing these issues up in a forum.
Mike
We don't need to debate these opinions they are mine
and I will do what I can to help whoever is elected.
Mike
