Dear CABS members,
I would like to announce that a CABS committee on legislation has been formed, and will have its first meeting this weekend. I will be the chairman of the committee, and other current members include BJ Sexton and Paul McEntire. This is my first post on an NFB-related listserv, so before discussing the committee more, I would like to introduce myself.
My name is Skylar Covich and I am currently a senior at Saint Mary’s College of California, in the San Francisco area, where I am a politics major. When not at college, I live in Redding, in the northern Central Valley, where I grew up. During my middle school and high school years in Redding I was involved in student government, music and skiing. Some of you may remember me as an NFB state and national scholarship winner in recent years; I have attended 2 national conventions and one state convention. I have been a member of CABS for the last year and have been attending conference calls. I also am a member of the San Francisco chapter of NFBC.
As a politics major and a former political intern and campaign worker, I hope to use my experience to help organize student voices on issues involving legislation in California, particularly relating to the Department of Rehab. We will work with the state legislative committee, and will discuss the topic of how to write a resolution.
The first conference call for the CABS legislative committee will be on this Saturday, January 17, at 3 PM. We will discuss the first steps that the committee will take, go over the guidelines for our participation, and take all suggestions and ideas. All are welcome to this meeting. If you are experienced at working on anything related to government policy, whether with the NFB or other organizations, we very much need your help. If you are new at this, we hope that you will come and learn with us.
To join the conference call, dial 1 (218) 486-1600, and enter the access code 283012. If you are unable to attend this conference call but would like to be involved, please e-mail me at sjc1 at stmarys-ca.edu, or call me at 530 276 1008.
Thank you for reading this message, and I look forward to lots of participation.
Thanks,
Skylar Covich
