Hi all,

As you know, today is Sunday, October 4, 2009. What you may or
may not be aware of is what that means. Today is the day where the
California Association of Blind Students holds it’s open forum for
candidates to talk to you, the students of California (high school,
college, grad school, rehabilitation training center), about their
hopes and intentions as a prospective elected officer of cabs.
This is a great opportunity for you to gain valuable information to
make the most informed decision possible when elections take place at
the cabs business meeting on Friday, October 23rd. As you are reading
this, you might ask yourself “why should I care about this election?”
I would ask you to consider the power of your voice as a voice that
has influence on who represents you, the blind student in California.
Consider what you look for in a leader, what changes you feel you
want to see in cabs, in the state, in your schools, and who you
believe will give those views not just validity, but support those
views and look to make those changes real.
That said; please remember that cabs is not simply about the leaders
of the division, but about you. You are the people who drive the
movement, the people whose thoughts should matter in every decision
made, and the only way to insure that they do matter, is to make your
voice heard. All too often, we take our chance to make our
mark for granted and neglect to seal the deal. However, we now have
an opportunity to have a say, and I would strongly encourage,
challenge, implore each and every student who reads these words to
attend this forum, take part in this election, and find a way to be
involved with cabs. Know that involvement is leadership too, it’s
taking part in something (in this case, cabs; but it can be your
chapter, church, school, or in your community), and adding your
talents, skills, thoughts and feelings to the effort; by doing so,
you enrich and diversify the organization, movement or establishment
you are a part of.
I would like to close with one last thought…
Just about a year ago, the country was in the thick of a very
historic presidential race. The country took notice, not only to what
the candidates had to say on the various concerns the country had, but
to what voice they had. As a result, people turned out in record
numbers to cast their vote (what is interesting to think about is the
strong voice that the youth had in this election; all because they
stopped, took notice, heard a candidate that listened to them and
that spoke more truly to them). At the end of that election, people
felt like they counted, and they, for the first time in a while, felt
united. Yes, I suspect that feeling was not lost on many of you, and
another such feeling of unity, empowerment, and informed choice
awaits you. When you take a moment and really think about it, the
great things that you can help to build start today, because you all
can make great things happen within cabs.
     Take care, cabsters

 Darian

"And if you will join me in this improbable quest, if you feel destiny
calling, and see as I see, a future of endless possibility stretching
before us;
if you sense, as I sense, that the time is now to shake off our
slumber, and slough off our fear, and make good on the debt we owe
past and future generations,
then I'm ready to take up the cause, and march with you, and work with
you. Together, starting today, let us finish the work that needs to be
done, and
usher in a new birth of freedom on this Earth."- Baraq Obama
