[Cabs-talk] Article on community colleges in California

Depressing, discouraging, and disheartening, to say the least. I left the community college system in 2001, so I had the privilege of experiencing the system at just about its finest; perhaps I stayed so long because it was such a good experience! Tuition was an unbelievable $11 per unit, but I saw it rise to more than $20 before I left. By the time I hit grad school in 2004, regular tuition hikes in higher education were becoming the norm and widely protested by students everywhere and I often heard reports like this one. A decade of this with little or no improvement, or even backslide does not bode well for the economy, and perhaps worse for employment rates among working age blind people. As an Employment Services Specialist at the Lions Center for the Blind, I implore you to keep your expectations high, not to mention the expectations of others, and leverage as many non-traditional approaches to your employment search as possible--network, volunteer, and be professional and proactive. Don't be a statistic!

Cheers,

Serena
