We lost her before she turned 18, just as she was about to graduate high school. Caitlin had exceptional cognitive abilities and excelled at reading. She also lived with multiple disabilities including a physical disability that required her use of a wheelchair, a severe learning disability that affected her writing, and psychiatric disabilities. Caitlin became involved with disability advocacy as a young child and was the first child in her rural school district to use a service dog. She went on to become involved in the disability community by the age of 15. She loved policy work and spent a lot of time at the Capitol. Her death shook the disability community, and donations were made in her memory for a scholarship. Her family has asked CCDC to manage this scholarship, and they request that these funds be used to support a student with a disability who is studying Social Work with a social justice focus. Two applicants will receive $500 each. The funds can be applied to tuition and/or supplemental expenses (transportation, books, etc.), including expenses for trainings that will better enable the recipient to attend school such as testing prep, service dog training, tutoring on a specific topic, etc. To apply for this scholarship, click to complete an application HERE to complete an application or use this link: https://tinyurl.com/3sd6u5vw This application does require you to submit an essay or video that addresses your thoughts on/experiences with social justice and advocacy for people with disabilities. The deadline to apply for this opportunity is Wednesday, September 15th. Scholarship eligibility criteria: * Must be a student with a disability or a close relative of someone with a disability (like a sibling, particularly a twin of someone with a disability). * Career goals focused on social justice and disability. While not required, we would love to have our recipients keep in touch and share your progress throughout your educational journey. CCDC will also want to put your name and photo on our website. Selection process details: A team of people who Caitlin knew will make the selection. Scholarship recipients will be announced in fall 2021. Please share this email/information with any individual or community organization that could benefit from knowing about this opportunity. Thank you.
