The purpose of the California Community Service list is to serve as a forum through which members of the National Federation of the Blind of California Community Service Division may come together to discuss community service, the positive philosophy of the National Federation of the Blind, and how through these means we can raise expectations of blind Californians in their communities so that they may live the life they want.

Discussion topics can include how individuals find service opportunities, personal experiences with service projects, alternative techniques for effectively performing tasks on the project site, and strategies for appropriately educating supervisors, volunteers, and other members of the volunteer community about the abilities of the blind in the service setting. Postings of service opportunities from organizations (e.g., AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, Habitat for Humanity, and the United Way) and other opportunities that would be beneficial to individuals looking to get involved in community service are welcome. Accounts of service projects taken on by chapters and divisions of the National Federation of the Blind of California or the NFBC affiliate as a whole are also welcome as they function as positive examples of the National Federation of the Blind in the community service arena. Announcements concerning the activities of the National Federation of the Blind Community Service Division, including communications from the board of directors, committee meetings, and topical conference calls, will be disseminated via this list as well.

In addition to this listserv, interested individuals may connect with the division via Facebook by searching for “National Federation of the Blind of California Community Service Division.”
