This sounds very interesting and would be something I would enjoy. But unfortunately I am no longer a DOR consumer. Also I live in Redding. You did not mention how many hours a week one would have to put in, nor the location of the job. Due to the fact that I live alone on a budget, since I am legally blind, I do not drive. Meaning that relocation would be difficult. The Blind Advisory Committee meets four times a year, usually from around 9 AM to 4 PM. As an example, in 2015, BAC is scheduled to meet in February, May, July, and November. DOR pays for transportation (flights, train, etc.) for BAC members to one or two meetings a year. For the other two meetings, members from Sacramento and the Bay Area often attend in person, while members from southern California (and sometimes the Bay Area) attend via teleconference. BAC is a great opportunity to learn more about the inner workings of the Department of Rehabilitation, to network with the movers and shakers, and to make your voice heard. Hope this is helpful. Yes, I do believe that it should apply to blind people and those with other disabilities. As long as the position is a good fit for the persons ability's. Why should we be excused? We are capable, abled body folks that so happen to go about life a little differently. We are fighting for equal rights, correct? This would be a part of being equal. We work, we shop, dine out and travel, marry and raise families, play sports and root for our favorite teams, on top of that , we do blind things. If we can do all that, then we can volunteer. We do not let our blindness define us. Sorry I haven't been able to attend any of the phone meetings. I now have a part time job at my church and do 2 days volunteering at a local hospital, and am loving it. Life has taken an up swing and am getting happier as the weeks go by. Hope all is well there.
