DISCUSSION TOPICS
. Candy for fundraiser distributed to members.
. Fundraising committee--Jim Debus reported on Fundraising
Committee. Ideas for fundraising reviewed and information presented by
Carol on what others in Columbus area are doing for fundraisers. Examples
of those were given, such as Nationwide Children's Hosp Wine Tasting at the
Home & Garden Show, Spaghetti supper by a large area church, etc. Ideas
outside of the box.
. MariLynn reported on the Orville Redenbacher Poppycock product
that was suggested as a possible fundraising idea. The Redenbacher Company
does not offer any fundraising.
. Jan meeting with OSSB--Carol summarized the January meeting with
OSSB's new Principal, Deb Miller and Superintendent, Cynthia Johnson.
Attending the meeting were Shelbi H, Eric D, Carol A and Debbie B. Efforts
made to develop a positive relationship with OSSB, thus benefiting the
students and the NFB. Possibility of holding some future NFB meetings on
site and of a mentoring program. The National Reading Media Assessment was
also presented to the staff.
. Read Across America scheduled for March 2nd on Dr Seuss birthday,
we were hoping to be able to go to the Statehouse and read on March 1st and
it was suggested that we try to encourage Mary Butler to bring students to
do some reading. She has been a 1st grade teacher at OSSB for many years.
Aliyah read a report on what the Cleveland Chapter had planned for this
effort. Hosting a 3 hour program at Cleveland Sight Center with reading,
cookies and hot chocolate. It was suggested that we consider something
similar for next year and beginning planning In January 2014 with the hopes
of booking a room in the Main Library downtown.
. OSSB Mentors and meetings-Possibility of scheduling a Chapter
meeting on a week nite so that students could attend? School had a mentoring
program in place, but no one is in charge since that person moved out of
state, so it is inactive. Our chapter could do mentoring 1:1 or as a
group and could consider offering to adopt their mentor program in 2014. It
would consist of high School age kids (there were 12 at our January party.)
It could be a 1x month and we could possibly do our chapter meeting on the
same day. In order to access the kids, we might want to do their things
first and meeting to follow. Would have to check with school and vote on
this. Thursday eve was said to be the Blind Bowlers League night and it was
questionable as to this being a reason to exclude Thursdays as an option.
. March chapter meeting- Jim said his instructor, the Day
Coordinator at OSSB, plans to attend the meeting, as does J W Smith.
. We are to find out who our Congressional Rep is, to document at
next meeting. Shelbi noted that Tiberi is her Rep.
. Online Auction- need ideas for contributions.
. Scrip orders for March due by the 3rd at 7 pm.
. Gourmet Food Basket/Gift Card giveaway tix should be available at
March meeting. Proceeds going to sponsor BELL program.
. We have not done the NFB publication sharing at last few meeting.
But, will have one at next meeting to be chosen and shared by Carol.
. MariLyn requested she receive NFB information sent to her.
Meeting was adjourned at 3:45 pm.
Respectfully submitted by Carol Akers, Secretary
