program of the New York ReelAbilities Film Festival. This festival features
award-winning films and engaging, special presentations that celebrate the
lives, stories and art of people with disabilities.
Two of the scheduled films will be audio described at different locations by
Accessible Arts of Central Ohio in cooperation with VSA Ohio.
Tickets are just $5.00 per person and can be purchased at the door. Be sure
to arrive approximately 30 minutes in advance to pick up a receiver, get
seated and listen to program notes, etc.
Friday, October 4: Opening Night
Location:
Columbus College of Art and Design, Canzani Center
60 Cleveland avenue, Columbus OH 43215.
7:00 pm: Keynote Introduction
7:30 pm: Audio Description of Mary & Max
This film is approximately 85 minutes in length and will be audio described
by Jane Ehrenfeld of Accessible Arts of Central Ohio.
Approximately 9:00-10:00 pm: Reception open to the public - including light
appetizers and refreshments.
Synopsis of Mary & Max:
This is a feature film from the Creators of the Academy Award winning short
animation Harvie Krumpet. It is a tale of pen-friendship between very
different people. Mary Dinkle, a chubby, lonely 8 year-old girl living in
the suburbs of Melbourne and Max Horoeitz, a 44 year-old obese Jewish man
with aspergers syndrome living in the chaos of New York.
Spanning 20 years and 2 continents, Mary and Max's friendship survives much
more than the average diet of life's ups and downs. Like Harvie Krumpet,
Mary and Max is innocent but not naive as it takes us on a journey that
explores friendship, autism, taxidermy, psychiatry, alcoholism, where babies
come from, obesity, cleptomania, sexual difference, copulating dogs,
religious difference, agoraphobia and much much more.
Saturday, October 5
Location:
Worthington McConnell Arts Center
777 Evening street, Worthington OH 43085
2:00 pm: Audio Description of Aphasia
This film is approximately 45 minutes in length and will be audio described
by Madeleine Fix of Accessible Arts of Central Ohio.
Synopsis of Aphasia:
This film tells the true story of the actor, Carl McIntyre. It's about the
effects of a massive stroke he suffered at the age of 44 when he lost his
ability to read, write and speak. Starring as himself, McIntyre portrays his
life story with an incredibly nuianced performance. Through humor and
pathos, aphasia speaks to anyone who has struggled to meet life's
challenges.
