A little over a year ago, we launched a clinical study to evaluate a potential treatment for Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder. Non-24 is a chronic sleep disorder that affects approximately 50% of individuals who are totally blind. Their inability to perceive light causes a severe disruption of the 24-hour sleep-wake pattern causing cyclical bouts of nighttime sleeplessness and excessive daytime fatigue and napping. The disorder can make it extremely difficult to do well in school, hold down a job or have satisfying relationships. Non-24 has been called an “invisible disability,” and can go undiagnosed for years. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='text-autospace:none'><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='text-autospace:none'>Recently, our 24SleepWake website has launched an exclusive new audio series, “Meet the Experts: Sleep Disorders in the Blind.” This 3 part series features interviews with leading sleep experts and covers all aspects of Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder, including its impact on the blind community.
