She provided a brief treasurer’s report. Shelbi read this. The balance is $500.65. The only activity was the food for BELL which cost $152. Heather moved this report be accepted as given. Mike F. seconded the motion. It passed. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA>Several members are not on the chapter list serv. Therefore, had not read the minutes from the June meeting. Carol was able to bring them up on her cell phone and read them to the group. Mike F. moved the minutes from the June meeting be accepted as read and emailed. Carol seconded the motion. It passed.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA>The chapter had moved and made rough plans to have a table at a local Walmart in October for Meet the Blind month. Mike F. suggested that we have a table at North Market on October 15th for Meet the Blind month, instead. He said people who go to Walmart go to shop with a purpose and leave. They do not go to browse. People at North Market are more relaxed and look around as they walk. Those of us at the meeting liked this idea. So we will have a table at North Market on October 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Note: That is National White Cane day and my birthday! <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA>Our regularly scheduled chapter meeting for the month of September would fall on Labor day weekend. We want to change the date if possible. Do not want to cancel the meeting. Shelbi will ask if it is possible to hold the chapter meeting on the second Saturday of the month. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA>The next state board of directors meeting will be on September 17. It will be held in Independence, Ohio, at the hotel where our convention will be. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA>Carol reported on the run/walk that was held at the end of June. She said it was hot but fun. People from five chapters participated. Information was shared. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA>People reported on their experiences at the national convention. It was Heather’s first national convention and she found it overwhelming due to all the people and noise. Alex participated in the marshal program as a “talking sign”. The family participated in a wide range of meetings and activities. Mike L. reported that the lawyers division won the penny war with the students being a close second. The parents division was last in the penny war. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA>The voting issues that people with disabilities face were discussed. If you encounter any difficulties with accessibility in the upcoming election you need to let Luanne Blake at the national office know. It is also a good idea to let a local person know. At this time it does not appear that people in Columbus are having difficulties at the poles but there have been reports of trouble from around the state. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA>Mike L. stated that the rehabilitation system in Ohio has diminished over the years since he was a young college student and now that he has returned and is seeking services. His experience is that the system is no longer in place to help people get an education or a job. The leadership does not take appeals seriously. This is a laughing matter to them. Clients are mislead regarding the proper process for appealing decisions. Shelbi has had this experience but since Eric Duffy was present things worked out in the end for her. Disability Rights Ohio can only handle so many cases due to funding limitations. We have attempted to change the rehabilitation system using communications but it has not worked to date. Mike L. has an idea that he is working to implement which would allow for more appeals to be handled. The idea would use advanced law students from local universities. This idea has been discussed, in detail with Mike Kirkland of DRO. He is in favor of it. He is willing to work toward getting a program implemented. Their goal is to have a fledgling program in place by the year 2017. The law students would practice under the supervision of a licensed lawyer or a law professor. These students are required to have a given number of service hours and this program would count toward these. Mike L. thinks this program would help toward breaking down stereotypes through exposure to blindness. Currently, he reports, OOD wants to get people through their process for less than $5,000. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'><span lang=EN-CA>The 2016 BELL Academy came and went. Mike L. worked nights. Heather was ill so was not able to work nights. Shelbi worked in the kitchen. Overall the members of this chapter do not feel that BELL was a pleasant and successful program. There was a lot of discussion about this. Shelbi actually left early.
