The National Federation of the Blind of Ohio sends members to each Washington seminar to educate Ohio’s Congressional representatives about the need for the NFB’s legislative proposals. In addition, the National Federation of the Blind of Ohio also annually sponsors a Columbus seminar to promote State legislative proposals also aimed at improving the lives of the Blind.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif'>Unfortunately, the cost of these events is continuing to increase. The ever increasing cost of traveling to Washington and Columbus is making it increasingly difficult for members to attend these important events. Consequently, this year the NFB of Ohio is trying to raise $5,000 via a Crowdfunding campaign to defray the cost of members’ attendance at the Washington and Columbus seminars. Well, Nationally there are approximately 8 million adults and children who are considered Blind to some degree. Over ¼ million Blind individuals live in the State of Ohio. The Center for Disease Control estimates that the incidence of Blindness in the U.S. will more than double over the next 3 decades.</span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#404040'><o:p></o:p></span></p><p style='margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;background:white;vertical-align:baseline'><span style='font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#404040'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p style='margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;background:white;vertical-align:baseline'><span style='font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#404040'>Despite more than 75% of adults who are blind receiving a high school diploma or higher, depending on the data source used the unemployment rate of the blind still remains at a staggering 60%-70%. This unemployment rate jumps significantly for Blind individuals who have a second disability.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p style='margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;background:white;vertical-align:baseline'><span style='font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#404040'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p style='margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;background:white;vertical-align:baseline'><span style='font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#404040'>This means almost 30% of all blind individuals live at or below the poverty level.
