Hi all.
I understand that  for some of us have finals starting the week of the 7th.
In fact, I am one them.
So my suggestion, is that we have the conference call on the 6th at 6:00 PM.
If you have to leave, just let us know.
We just need time to talk about convention, treasurer's report, the website, 
and the membership  list.

Is this acceptable to all of you?

Marinelli Coccia Awards

Youth Service America
 is accepting nominations for the first Gladys Marinelli Coccia Awards to
recognize two young female social entrepreneurs whose initiatives serve the
common
good. The awards were created in memory of Gladys Coccia, who began her
entrepreneurial career when she was a young girl in West Virginia and later
became
a very successful businesswoman in Washington, D.C. 

To be eligible for the award, nominees must be between the ages of 14 and 17
on January 1, 2010; reside in the United States; have started her own social
enterprise or organization; be supported by contributions of at least $1,000
(cash and/or in-kind); and have a business plan, including an itemized
budget.

Special consideration will be given to nominees from West Virginia and
metropolitan Washington, D.C. Self-nominations are accepted. 

The award includes $2,000 for the awardee's social enterprise and travel,
lodging, and registration expenses to the 
National Service Learning Conference
 in San Jose, March 24-27, 2010. The awardee will serve as a spokesperson
for YSA's initiatives, will be invited to serve on the executive board of 
Girls Helping Girls,
and will be provided access to YSA's resources to support and expand social

  I just kind of got to thinking.. have any of you on this list ever
served as members of the summer program as students or staff or both?
 If so... When?   and as either staff or student? and what might be
your favorite memory from your time?
 I think my favorite memory as a student had to be  the water fight
we hadin 2001,  We had quite a few students who stayed back in the
apartments  who were not  going out  that friday night and I remember
that we went  about the apartments nailing  people who  were in the
program and deciding to stay home and not be a part of the  fun with
water.
  The fight was the one thing that  truley lifted my spirits and made
the summer seem like I actually could gain something, that I was not
being sent  off to summer school and learning things that I thought
were not useful to me.

I was a staff member in the full-time program, but always enjoyed having the younger students over to my house for barbecue and just fun of an evening. My favorite group (I do not remember the year) was with Eddie Kulp as the counselor, and a bunch of students. My wife Nancy always had water guns around, and a goodly number of the students took advantage of the fact. I remember two rules,
Don't shoot the dogs, and don's shoot the cook
Since Eddie didn't qualify as either of these, he caught the bus rather damp. What mad the whole thing enjoyable was exposing a couple of students to the joy of using sound targets, and being able to surprise someone by sneaking up on them. I think Eddie enjoyed it as much as I did.

Hi, Darrian!

Yeah, I remember that whole summer. It was a blast. My how things change, 
though. If you had asked me then where I'd be now, I'd probably say with a 
job working with blind students. However, I'm not, I'm looking for work, and 
have been married for about six months.

David and all,
 I sooo  remember that  year!
  I  smile fondly  with visions of it in my head.
  I remember about as well, attempting to go after somebody (probably
eddie) and ending up smacking my jaw on the support bar of the
hammock in the back yard where we were playing.
 Though I had cut the inside of  my mouth  with  my tooth on impact; I
had  an awsome time!
 by the way; that was summer 2001, David; if  facts are of any worth
while mention here.
  and, oh how time has changed, but the memories always stay with us.
