Agency Profile:  The mission of the Washington State School for the Blind is to provide specialized quality educational services to visually impaired/blind youth ages birth-21 within the state of Washington.  Our purpose is to serve as a statewide demonstration and resource center and provide direct/indirect services to students both on campus and in the children's local communities. Position Profile:  The Washington State School for the Blind is currently seeking to fill a Residential Life Dean (RLD) position.  This position is responsible for supervising the Residential Life Counselors and to provide direct residential department services to students. The incumbent will work closely with the Recreation, Food Service, Health Center, Fitness and Education Departments.  Under the direction of the Director of Transition, the incumbent will perform the following duties, including but not limited to.

  a.. Act as a lead for the Residential Department, including review and drafting of evaluations for department personnel. 
  b.. Provide and implement training regarding student safety, department protocol and agency policies. 
  c.. Participate in coordination of meal programs, student transportation, Daily Living Skills programs, Recreation and Fitness activities. 
  d.. Maintain on-going communication to ensure program success. 
  e.. Provide counseling and guidance to students with the purpose of facilitating student independence. 
  f.. Design, implement, and assess instructional programs that assist in the advancement of student development. 
  g.. Create and maintain a safe environment for the students. 
  h.. Provide assistance and accompany students on outings as necessary. 
  i.. Provide some light housekeeping and cooking duties. 
  j.. Provide regular communication to the department manager and co-workers regarding student related activities, behaviors and progress. 
  k.. May be required to lift or move students with or without reasonable accommodation. 
  l.. Assist students with daily planned outings, school work, or offer general assistance as necessary. 
Required Qualifications

  a.. Valid Washington State ID or driver's license and minimum age of 18. 
  b.. Bachelors degree in education, psychology, human relations, or related field. 
  c.. At least three years of experience working in an instructional setting with special needs children or two years of experience working with students with behavioral issues, autism, etc. 
  d.. At least one year of supervisory experience. 
  e.. Ability to work flexible schedule including occasional graveyard and swing shifts. 
  f.. Basic Microsoft Office software skills. 
  g.. Current Braille certification or ability to obtain certification within one year of employment. 
  h.. Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times. 
  i.. Ability to explain sometimes complex or technical information regarding rules, rights, regulations, policies, procedures, programs and services. 
  j.. Ability to respond to difficult, stressful or sensitive interpersonal situations in ways that will reduce or minimize potential conflict. 
  k.. Have or have the ability to obtain First Aid/CPR card and Food Handler's card. 
  l.. Willingness and ability to work with students with physical and developmental disabilities. 
  m.. Must be able to ride school provided or public transportation for reasonable distances, and ability to walk long distances. 
  n.. Ability to lift or assist students as necessary. 
  o.. Willingness and ability to maintain good working relationships with staff, parents, and students. 
  p.. Must pass state and federal criminal background checks. 
Desired Qualifications

  a.. Experience working with Blind or Visually Impaired people. 
  b.. Experience working with IEPs and online IEP systems. 
  c.. Experience working with students in the area of Daily Living Skills and Orientation and Mobility. 
  d.. Strong knowledge of applicable laws, rules and regulations regarding student education and safety. 
  e.. Knowledge of characteristics and limitations of  children with disabilities including but not limited to, mental, physical, neurological and emotional disabilities.

Note: This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, candidates who are appointed are required to become members of the WFSE, or arrange to pay to that union a fee equivalent to its regular monthly dues.
