Braille Literacy for Life


Adult Braille Reading contest

Did you learn Braille when you were over eighteen years old? Are you still
practicing those essential skills to maintain and increase your speed? Would
you like to have fun reading with an experienced Braille-reading blind
mentor who will encourage you to practice on a regular basis? If this
describes you, then our contest is for you! Improve your Braille reading
skills and compete for cash prizes!
 

Who is Eligible?

Blind adults living in Maryland who learned Braille over the age of
eighteen.
 

Contest Dates

>From September 1, 2017 to Louis Braille's birthday, January 4, 2018.
 

How the Contest Works

Contest participants will be divided into two categories-those who learned
Braille in the last three years, and those who have been reading Braille
longer than that. Read as much Braille as you can during the contest period
and keep track of what you have read. 
 

 


 


Contest Prizes

There will be three winners in each category. The top prize in each category
is $150, the second prize is $100, and the third prize is $50. 
 

Contest Rules

The rules of the contest are simple! 
*        You must register to participate in the contest. Registrations will
not be accepted after December 1.
*        All participants must be Maryland residents.
*        You can read Braille books, magazines, and/or religious materials. 
*        Keep track of the books and/or magazines you have read during the
contest period (September 1, 2017 to January 4, 2018). Include the title,
author, number of pages read, and the date you started and the date you
finished reading the book. 
*        Prizes will be awarded based on the total number of pages read. 
*        All reading logs should be sent to Ellen Ringlein, Chair of the
Braille Literacy for Life contest committee, by January 22, 2018. 
*        Prizes will be awarded by March 1. 
*        A panel of judges reserves the right to ask questions about
materials you have read for contest credit. 
 
Get a head start and register early, so you are ready to go when the contest
begins on September 1.

following information: 
*        Name
*        Address
*        Phone Number
*        Email address
*        Your current age
*        The age at which you learned Braille (remember, you must have
started learning Braille over age eighteen to be eligible for the contest.)

After You Register

You will receive an email or phone call acknowledging your registration. You
will be matched with a mentor who will work with you to get started and who
will check in with you periodically. Your mentor is available to read with
you throughout the contest to help build your Braille reading skills.
