<html><head><meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"></head><body dir="auto"><div>What is this nonsense about if you have a white cane please bring it. A white cane is not an item that is put away and conveniently brought out for displays. A white cane is a necessary item for many of us that helps us explore the environment around us and ensures a certain amount of safety. The use of a white cane is a skill that one acquires through practice and experience. I think that someone who thinks we carry white canes just for show is in dire need of an education no matter how impressive agendas may appear to some. White cane usage not only shows a philosophy of freedom and independence, but helps to promote it. In that light, doesn't a statement such as "Bring a white cane," if you have one,"sound a bit ridiculous, as if I would leave home without it. Where I was trained in cane travel we were trained to remain alert, even with an escort. Escorts can make mistakes, too, and it's up to the white cane user to decide whether or not to follow an escort into a mistake. White cane usage, then, is an acceptance of responsibility for one's own safety that is not thrown aside. Based on his wording, I would say our agenda writer hadn't realized that yet. I'm an experienced white cane user who has used my white cane throughout years of education and work, and even hiking and backpacking, and while I lived and studied in a foreign country. </div><div><br></div><div>"Bring your white cane, if you have one," as if a user is going to arrive without it!!
