RESTAURANT GUIDE
2023 NFB NATIONAL CONVENTION
HOUSTON, TEXAS
Welcome to Houston home to fun, food and drinks,
There are more than 10,000 restaurants in Houston, and the variety should satisfy just about everyone. If you want Italian, we have it. If you want Chinese, it's here. If you want to spice it up with Mexican eateries, the choices are endless. If you are just looking for an all American burger, Houston will not disappoint.
A few Houston Chapter and affiliate members have given us their recommendations, and we'll share those first. Not all of these favorite haunts are in the downtown area. Following these personal recommendations, we'll offer you lots of other options as well.
1. Raul Gallegos, president of NAGDU and first vice president of our affiliate, and Stacie Gallegos, president of the Houston Chapter, are big fans of barbecue. Their favorite BBQ can be found at Stockyard Bar-B-Q. Of course, every Texan has their own favorite. So, we'll share some other options below. Stockyard is about 10 miles from the Hilton Americas Hotel. Stockyard has the best mixture of ribs, beef, sausage, and chicken. Their side dishes are equally scrumptious, according to Stacie and Raul.

2. George Battiste is a member of the NFB of Texas board and a very active member of the Houston Chapter. George is originally from New Orleans. So he knows good food. and the place he recommends is Teotihuacan. Teotihuacan is about five miles from the hotel. So, you'll want to get a Lyft, Uber, or ZTrip to take you to this food paradise. If you are a shrimp fan, George says you'll enjoy the Caliente Shrimp. George also says they have the best enchiladas on the planet, but just like our opinions about barbecue, most Texans have strong opinions about their enchiladas.

Louis Maher, the NFB of Texas secretary and treasurer of the Houston Chapter, recommends Kim Son for downtown dining. Not only is it a good choice for Vietnamese and other Asian dishes, but it is only about a half mile from the Hilton. Louis's favorite dishes at Kim Son are the Pad Thai and their hot and sour soup. His wife, Helen enjoys the Chicken Vermicelli Bowl.

3. Liz Wisecarver, Houston Chapter secretary and NFB-NEWSLINE® Texas coordinator, recommends visiting The Blind Goat for a taste of Vietnamese food with a modern twist. Executive Chef and best-selling cookbook author Christine Ha is the blind chef who won "MasterChef" season 3 with Gordon Ramsay. You can visit the Blind Goat at its new Spring Branch location. It is about 12.5 miles or a 20-minute ride away from the Hilton Americas Hotel. Reservations are encouraged: For parties of seven or more, please call 346-298-1660 or email info at TheBlindGoat.com.

4. Randy Farber is a long time Houstonian who serves as a member of the board of the National Association of Blind Lawyers. He recommends the Original Barnaby's Cafe. This is a local hole in the wall, and everything there is good. You should be hungry when you go, because the portions are large. There are several Barnaby's locations in and near downtown, but you should go to the Original on Fairview St. It is about 2.4 miles or 10 minutes from the Hilton Americas Hotel.

5. The Houston Chapter has its own favorite food establishment downtown, and it is only about six minutes away from the Hilton Americas. It's Buffalo Wild Wings, and although it is a national chain rather than a local spot, the staff gets the gold medal for service, and the food is always fresh and tasty.
6. The chapter hits BWW to celebrate birthdays, job promotions, anniversaries, graduations, puppy birthdays, it didn't rain today, White Cane Awareness Day, leave work early, or whatever excuse we can find to get together. We've been there so frequently that the staff has named table #181 the Houston Chapter table.

8. Now, remember what we said earlier? If you are looking for a good burger, Houston will not disappoint. When in Texas, everyone should treat themselves to a Whataburger. This Texas tradition has some of the biggest and tastiest burgers anywhere. There are multiple locations around town, and most are open 24 hours a day. The nearest location is about three miles from the Hilton. You can also order a Whataburger from Uber Eats or most other food delivery services.

The happiest people don't have the best of everything - they just make
The best of everything they have... So please remember: Live simply.
Love generously. Care Deeply. Speak Kindly. Leave the Rest to God.
And remember - the richest person is not the one who has the most, but
The one who needs the least.
