Subject: Chapter updates

March 1 is upon us and our bingo fundraiser is scheduled for May 16, 2026. We are in great need of several things necessary to make this event happen. Such as items for our raffle baskets., gift cards, and other small giveaway items. We also will be getting an estimate of how many tickets each member will need. So look forward. to receiving some type of communication from the membership committee regarding collecting this information. To help cover some of the cost the chapter will be selling peanuts for four dollars per bag and we have a total of 112 needing to be sold..
The art Wok scheduled for May 2, 2026 has reached his limit for participants, if you did not get a chance to have your name on the list for this date you will have a opportunity to do so later in the fall.

The Community service and outreach committee has begun collecting items for the clothes closet and also toiletries for gift bags. If you have any new or gently used items to give, please contact someone on this committee. Please remember to have whatever you are donating washed or clean and folded.

The braille and crochet classes which will be taught by Mary Conner will begin on Saturday, March 7 from 9:30 AM till noon at the McGill Rose Garden located at 940 North Davison St. if you have interest in participating in either one of these activities, please contact Mary Conner to reserve your spot.

We still have quite a few T-shirts left over from the fundraiser that was held for our white cane walk in the fall of 2024. It is important for each member to have a shirt as we will be wearing them in some of our upcoming events later this year. If you have not purchased a shirt or if you are a new member and need to please contact Marlon Stover to do so

The National Federation of the Blind National Convention will be held July 3–8, 2026, in Austin, Texas, at the JW Marriott and the Austin Marriott Downtown overflow hotel. Room rates are $139 per night for single or double occupancy and $155 for triple or quad occupancy, plus 19% in taxes and fees. The first night’s room charge is due at the time of booking. To reserve a room, call 800-627-7468 and use room block BL1. Cancellations made by May 31, 2026, will receive a 50% deposit refund; no refunds are available after that date.

National Convention Registration Now Open

Early bird registration for the National Convention is now open. Go to https://nfb.org/civicrm/event/register?reset=1&id=641 to register. The cost is $25, plus banquet tickets for those who plan to attend the banquet.

The Kenneth Jernigan Scholarships support active blind and sighted first-time attendees at the National Convention. Applications are due by March 31, 2026, and applicants must meet with President Sharon Weddington for a letter of support. In recent years, individual awards have been $700 and family awards $1,100; these do not cover all expenses. Recipients receive a prepaid Visa card after arriving at the hotel at a specified time and location. The online application must be completed in one session, so applicants are encouraged to prepare responses in Microsoft Word and copy and paste them. Those who are not comfortable using a computer are encouraged to seek assistance from a friend. The online application can be found at https://nfb.org/get-involved/national-convention/kenneth-jernigan-convention-scholarship.
