Very nice job Deanna! Your excellent notes keep me well informed. I will not be able to attend the July meeting but I am confident I will not miss a thing with you on the job. :)

NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND OF CINCINNATI Meeting minutes for June 27th, 2015

1. The June 27th meeting of the Cincinnati Chapter of the National
Federation of the Blind was called to order by President, Deborah Kendrick at 12:59 PM at Washington Platform Restaurant. The following were present: Deborah Kendrick, Walter Mitchell, Deanna Lewis, Emily Pennington, Lillie Pennington, Lisa Hall, Kim McEachirn, Annie McEachirn Carson, Sheri Albers, Jessie McDaniel, Chris Sabine, Dale Barta, David Perry, and Judy Rudig. Two previous members, Tammy Smith and Judy Cook joined us, as well as one guest, Sue Von Holle.
2. The meeting started with our introductions and Mini-Blind. This
month, members shared their thoughts on Helen Keller, in honor of her Birthday (6/27/1880).
3. We all read the NFB slogan aloud. Here it is for future reference:
The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can have the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
4. Minutes: Deborah mentioned that there was an error in the May
minutes. Item number 9 was not written correctly, regarding the National Convention funds. The money that we gave for the National funds, was sent to the state affiliate, and will be included with the other contributions from other Chapters in Ohio.
The minutes were approved as corrected.
5. Emily Pennington read the Treasurer's Report to the group. The
President mentioned that since the minutes are posted on an open listserv that the monetary amounts should not be listed in the minutes, the Chapter mutually agreed upon this.
It was also noted that the request from the Drive for 75 committee was accepted and our six Convention attendees each received $75.00.
Dale Barta made a motion that the Treasurer's report be approved as read. Lillie Pennington seconded and the motion passed.
6. Braille Monitor Article: Annie McEachirn Carson shared an
article from the Braille Monitor, titled, "Our Latest Battle in the Right to Read: The Blind Strive for Access to 40 Million Titles," by Gary Wunder. The NFB has been helping a lady who is unable to access the Scribd website. Scribd offers a service similar to Netflix, where you pay a monthly fee and are able to choose from millions of books to read on any device. Unfortunately, the site is not accessible and Scribd claims that they do not have to make it accessible, even though they clearly fall under the ADA regulations.
Deborah Kendrick will be a plaintiff in this lawsuit.
Emily Pennington has volunteered to cover a Braille Monitor article at our next meeting.

7. Americans with Disabilities Act 25th Anniversary Celebration:
On Monday, July 27th, there will be a celebration in downtown Cincinnati for the ADA. There will be a walk from City Hall to Fountain Square. Following the walk, there will also be guest speakers, advocates, entertainers, and more activities on Fountain Square. The event starts at 9:30 and will run until about 1:30.

Deanna Lewis mentioned that Clovernook Center will have people participating in the walk. She also mentioned that the Center for Independent Living Options held a writing contest, asking people to write about how the ADA has impacted their lives. Deanna wrote a poem and was selected as the First-Prize winner. She read the poem aloud and has also been asked to read her poem at the event.

8. Committee Reports: Deborah suggested that all committees post
information on their meetings on the Cinci-NFB listserv. This way, non-committee members can also participate.

A. Membership Committee: Chris Sabine discussed the following:

· Chris has been in contact with former and current members who
are not able to attend the monthly meetings.

· There is no news yet to report on the P.O. Box.

· The committee will be meeting again, on the evening of
Sunday, June 28th.

B. Recreation: Kim McEachirn and Deanna Lewis (Co-chairs) reported
on the upcoming movie and dinner on Saturday, August 8th.

· We will be meeting at the Oakley Theatre and then travelling
to a nearby restaurant.

· The committee has narrowed it down to two restaurants in the
area, both being about 1 ½ -2 miles away. They are Arthur's and Oakley Pub and Grill. Both restaurants will let us order off of the regular menu and receive separate checks. Oakley Pub and Grill does take reservations, but Arthur's does not, and may not be able to seat us all together. Deborah also described the layout of Arthur's. No one has been to the Oakley Pub and Grill, so David Perry has graciously offered to check it out and will follow-up soon. We will conduct an email (or phone) vote to decide which restaurant to go to. More information will be coming soon, and the decision and voting deadline will be July 10th.

· The committee is working on arranging volunteers to give
rides from the Oakley Theatre to the restaurant. Kim McEachirn motioned that the volunteers receive $10 for their service. Dale Barta seconded and the motion passed.

· The committee is also working on two future events as well; a
tour of Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum in the fall, and the Christmas Party.

C. Fundraising: Sheri Albers reported on the following topics:
Braille-a-thon:

· The Braille-a-thon will be taking place at the Kroger in
North College Hill on Saturday, July 18th from 10:00-2:00.

· The donation sheets were passed around and will also be sent
out via email. The event flyer will also be sent via email.

· Donations should be made prior to the Braille-a-thon, since
we are not permitted to solicit donations at the event. Donors can give a flat fee donation, or give a certain amount for the pages read.

· Kim McEachirn will be posting a flyer at the North College Hill Kroger.

· Kim McEachirn has also offered to donate bottled water for the event.

· We will also be passing out NFB Literature at the event.

· Even if you are not a Braille reader, you can still come and
help us out.

D. Meet the blind month committee: Sheri reported that the
committee has been hard at work planning events for each week in October. They are:

· School assembly for junior or high school aged children. Some
of the topics covered will be; technology, jobs, some activities we like to do, and why it's cool to be blind.

· White cane walk on October 15th.

· Possibilities Fair: A workshop for blind adults. There will
be different stations showcasing technology, Braille, Newsline, knitting, and much more. We will look into holding this event at the Downtown Library.

9. Walter Mitchell mentioned some ideas he has for getting parents
of blind children more involved in our Chapter. Some possibilities that were mentioned are an essay contest for grades 7-12 and an ice cream or pizza party. Deborah will be assembling a committee to work on these things.

10. Deborah mentioned that she will be out of
town for our July meeting, so we may not be meeting in July.

11. David Perry mentioned that there will be a
Goalball demonstration on July 25th. He will be sending out more information soon.

12. National Convention Door Prizes: Sheri
motioned that we contribute $25 for National Convention door prizes.
Kim seconded and the motion passed.

13. Auction: Several auction items were brought
in this month:

A. Judy Cook brought in a blue and white umbrella with the new NFB
logo on it, won by Deanna Lewis with a bid of $17.

B. Walter Mitchell brought in an umbrella with his company logo
L2Tpands. It was won by Kim McEachirn with a bid of $8.

C. Emily Pennington brought in a book on tape, "A time to kill,
"by John Grisham. This was won by Tammy Smith with a bid of $6.

14. The meeting was adjourned at 2:50 PM.

Respectfully submitted,
Deanna Lewis, Secretary
