National Federation of the Blind of Cincinnati

  Meeting Minutes for March 2016

  1. The March meeting of the National Federation of the Blind of Cincinnati was convened by President Deborah Kendrick at approximately 2:30 P.M. at the Washington Platform Restaurant in Downtown Cincinnati. Members in attendance were: Deborah Kendrick, Christopher Sabine, Judy Rudig, Lisa Hall, Sheri Albers, Bernie Dressell, Paul Dressell, Lilly Pennington, Emily Pennington, Bill Innis, Karren Innis, Rachel Kuntz, Elif Emir Oksuz and Paul Jordan. Also in attendance were three guests: Jamie Reynolds, Billy Brandon and Merrick Morgan. There was no mini-blind this month, as all three guests took time to introduce themselves at today's meeting.

Jamie Reynolds is a student who is planning on joining the Federation. She reportedly arrived in the Greater Cincinnati area four months prior to this meeting from California and is planning on studying Criminal Justice and Rehabilitation Counseling at Wright State University.

Billy Brandon-another first time chapter attendee-is also entering Wright State university, where he plans to study Mass Communication. He currently operates a feed on the social networking platform Periscope with 5,500 followers. He reported that today is the one-year anniversary of the launch of his Periscope feed.

Merrick Morgan is the son of Rachel Kuntz. He expressed that he is planning on studying music in Florida with his father. He reportedly plays the saxophone, clarinet, flute, piano and bass.

  2. Sheri Albers moved to accept the February 2016 minutes as emailed. Paul Dressell seconded, and the motion passed.

  3. Emily Pennington read this month's Treasurer's report. Sheri Albers moved to accept the report; Bernie Dressell seconded. The motion passed.

  4. Deborah Kendrick discussed the upcoming annual Convention of the National Federation of the Blind, which will be held from June 30 to July 5 at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel in Orlando, Florida. She indicated that Chapter members can make hotel reservations by calling the hotel at (866) 966-6338; members can register for National Convention online by visiting NFB's web site at http://www.nfb.org. Applications for the Jernigan Scholarship for first time Convention attendees are being taken until April 1. Members can contact Eric Duffy, President of the National Federation of the blind of Ohio, for further information about the Jernigan Scholarship and the application process.

  5. Deborah discussed the NFB National and Ohio Scholarships. She indicated that the deadline to apply for the NFB National Scholarship is March 31. The NFB Ohio Scholarship Deadline is May 15. Deborah indicated that NFB Ohio has three scholarships available. Those interested in obtaining further information or applying for a scholarship can visit the NFB of Ohio web site (http://www.nfbohio.org) or see Deborah, who chairs NFB Ohio's Scholarship Committee. Deborah also took time to introduce the current award winners attending today's meeting; they were: Emily Pennington, Sheri Albers, Elif Emir Oksuz and Judy Rudig.

  6. Committee Reports:

  a. State Fundraising:

Deborah indicated that Walter Mitchell, who is primarily involved in statewide fundraising efforts, was unable to attend today's meeting. Deborah reported that she was able to contact Walter for a report of current statewide fundraising activities. The inspirational concert previously scheduled for April has reportedly been postponed indefinitely, as Walter has been unable to find a place to hold it. Deborah expressed that Walter is now in charge of corporate sponsorships for the Ohio March for Independence, the statewide initiative to raise funds to send NFB members to National Convention. Deborah also expressed that Walter has been unable to secure any sponsorships as of today's meeting, but urges all Chapter members in attendance to provide Walter with the names of any additional companies who could become sponsors.

Sheri Albers gave an update on her efforts to organize NFB Ohio's station at the Flying Pig Marathon, which is also part of the Marching for Independence Initiative. Sheri indicated that NFB Ohio members are participating in the marathon as volunteers and reported that she has secured a station for this event, which will begin at 6:45 A.M. on Sunday May 1. Sheri reported that the station-referred to as the "Best Little Tissue" (BLT) Station-is located in a two-block area near the intersection of Victory Parkway and Martin Luther King Dr. Volunteers will reportedly be handing out Puffs Tissues donated by Procter and Gamble. She expressed that 25-30 volunteers are needed; 20 have reportedly registered as of March 26 2016. NFB Ohio will receive $500 to staff the station, which will evidently go to NFB Ohio to support Marching for Independence.

Sheri presented tickets for the "Piggest Raffle Ever", which she indicated were being sold for $5 each. The top prize is $10,000, 5,000 of which goes to the winning individual and $5,000 goes to NFB Ohio.

Sheri also discussed the Charity 5K Race, which will be held in Columbus on June 26. NFB Ohio is reportedly signed up for the event as a sponsor, and the affiliate is seeking participants in the race as well as sponsors for participants. Sheri reported that a challenge has been posted to the Ohio-Talk Listserv for Chapters to solicit as many members as possible to take part in the race and serve as sponsors. She expressed that the cost to register for the race is $30, and participants will receive a T-shirt for signing up. She emphasized that the 5K Charity Race is a general membership event that NFB Ohio is sponsoring along with many other organizations.

  b. Recreation Committee:

Both chairs of the Recreation Committee, Kim McEachirn and Deanna Lewis, were absent from today's meeting. There was no report from the Recreation Committee this month, as no meeting was held. Rachel gave a brief description of the Spring grove Cemetery tour scheduled for May 7. The tour is free to Chapter members; anyone interested in attending should email Annie McEachirn. Annie sent an email regarding this event to Chapter members prior to today's meeting.

  c. Membership Committee:

Christopher Sabine reported that there was no Membership Committee meeting this month, as two members essential to a proposal the committee is considering were unable to attend, and the meeting had to be rescheduled to March 28 at 7:00 P.M., two days after the Chapter meeting. Christopher indicated that the Facebook page has 48 likes, and member recruitment efforts are ongoing.

  7. Other Business:

Elif Emir Oksuz discussed her workshop for counselors and counseling educators on working with blind clients, which she conducted on March 11 on the University of Cincinnati Campus. She expressed that the purpose of this workshop was to educate participants on effective practice with blind clients seeking professional counseling services-not vocational rehabilitation. Elif indicated that the workshop lasted two hours and consisted of experiential activities and a panel discussion. Rachel Kuntz, Sheri Albers and Marianne Denning also reportedly attended the workshop and participated in discussions. Elif expressed that the workshop received excellent participant evaluations. She reported that she is presenting a paper on effective counseling with blind clients at a joint conference of the American Counseling Association and Canadian Counseling and Psychotherapy Association on April 3 in Montreal.

  8. The meeting adjourned at approximately 3:20 P.M. on March 26, 2016.

  Respectfully Submitted,

  Christopher Sabine
