Greetings federation family, I hope all of you had a great end of the year?
We in the federation enjoy so many good times and we have many more to come.
The state convention was a great one and it is my pleasure to serve you.
Several great things happen at the state convention and many great
partnerships for the future of the NFBO was developed. We had so many
first-time conventioneers I hope you continue to reach out to them. I
started working from home right before Christmas and that will help me to
get more done with the down time. I will ask if you see anything in this
email that you wish to ask a question about please email me off list at
rchpay7 at gmail.com <mailto:rchpay7 at gmail.com> While it is tempting
sometimes to just do as much work as I can it would not be right to try and
do it all, I do not even want to kid you it is not possible. We have so
much work to do that even though the year just began we are running behind.
I will share with you that several of our NFBO family members are preparing
to go to the Washington seminar. Sherri is very busy planning for this very
important event. I will be attending the affiliate presidents meeting
January 28in Baltimore. I will be including in the body of this email
information about the committees for 2017 I also wish to encourage you to
reach out to me if for some reason, you thought I should have got your
request to serve. This Wednesday I will be in federal court to try and
mediate along with several other plaintiffs against the Dayton mall and the
greater Dayton regional transit to add a bus stop and fix rout buses at the
Dayton mall. We currently have a strike going on with the bus system in
Dayton and I will keep you posted about that. I am also going to include the
presidents note book that will have information that you should be paying
close attention to. Next Monday January 23rd at 7:00 PM the board of
directors of NFBO will have our state board meeting, you should make a point
to call 712/775/7031 and use code 240281423 this meeting is open to all of
you and should be well attended.

I have also included a message at the end from OOD.

Dear Fellow Federationists,

I had the opportunity to represent the Federation at the Consumer Electronic
Show (CES) last week. In talking to technology providers, it is encouraging
to find more awareness of what "accessibility" means than I did years ago
when I last attended CES. It is clear that we are living in an
ever-connected world from cars, to homes, to wearables, to the physical
environment. I think that our advocacy and technology expertise put the
blind in a great position to take advantage of all of these innovations.

Technology will never be the answer. We need to continue to articulate our
philosophy about blindness. I think that we need to walk carefully around
the use of technology making sure that the blind continue to direct that use
in our lives. There are many simple things that do not require a technology
solution. However, how can we further leverage technology to give us
increased access to information that is expensive or difficult to get in our
everyday lives? It will be up to the National Federation of the Blind to
define what the cutting edge of technology and independence is, and I am
looking to the leaders of the Federation to help by actively participating
in those discussions.

Critical Actions This Week:

Washington Seminar:
The Great Gathering-In is exactly three weeks from today. Please schedule
appointments with members of your Congressional delegation for January 31,
February 1, and February 2. Once your appointments are scheduled, please
notify us at Hillappointments at nfb.org <mailto:Hillappointments at nfb.org> ,
providing as much information about each meeting as you can, including:
date, time, meeting location, and (perhaps most importantly) whether you are
meeting with a staffer or an actual member of Congress.

The 2017 Legislative Fact Sheets <https://nfb.org/washington-seminar> are
online. This is a great time to be studying our issues for the 2017
Washington Seminar and memorizing the fact sheets. Be sure to check back
often for updates regarding the Washington Seminar in the weeks leading up
to the Great Gathering-In on January 30 at 5:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn
Capitol.

News:

2017 BELL Academy Program launched:
On Louis Braille's birthday, January 4, we launched the 2017 BELL Academy
Program with Wells Fargo. In addition to sponsoring the BELL Academy, Wells
Fargo will provide strategic input into the program and offer team member
volunteers at select academies.

Presidential Release:
The January Presidential Release has been posted to our website at

EPUB 3 Training Seminar:
We will be hosting a training seminar designed to teach how to create and
implement accessible EPUB 3 in a variety of different settings and to
discuss the upcoming release of the EPUB accessibility conformance
specification. This event will be hosted under the auspices of the National
Federation of the Blind (NFB) Center of Excellence in Nonvisual Access to
Education, Public Information, and Commerce (CENA), with financial support
through the Non-Visual Accessibility Initiative grant from the State of

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back.

The National Federation of the Blind is a community of members and friends
who believe in the hopes and dreams of the nation’s blind. Every day we work
together to help blind people live the lives they want.

I have been asked by OOD to share this information with our chapters.

Hello and happy new year from our BSVI staff! We were glad to meet or catch
up with many of you at November’s statewide meeting, but now doesn’t that
seem a long time ago?

During 2017, we’re setting some big goals, and these include outreach,
involving you. If possible, local and some statewide staff would like to
attend one of your chapter meetings. We would plan to make it a brief but
productive session. First, we’d like to offer some updates on what’s
happening in the agency. Second, we’d like to hear from you as we make
further outreach plans. Since you live in your community every day, you’re
the experts about what doctors, teachers, librarians, community leaders or
others you think we’d do well to reach out to. And finally, as always, we
want to encourage any questions we can answer in the informal atmosphere of
your own meeting place.

For questions and possible dates, we can join you, please email Elizabeth
Sammons at Elizabeth.sammons at ood.ohio.gov
<mailto:Elizabeth.sammons at ood.ohio.gov> or call/voicemail her at
614.438.1260.

Thanks for your considering participation with this, and as we await your
reply, we are wishing you the very best for this 2017.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Sammons and all the BSVI staff
