Meeting Minutes for April 2017

1 The April 2017 meeting of the National Federation of
the Blind of Cincinnati was convened by teleconference by President Deborah
Kendrick at 8:20 PM on May 4, 2017. In attendance were: Deborah Kendrick,
Lisa Hall, Christopher Sabine, Emily Pennington, Elif Emir Oksuz, Judy
Rudig, Alan Lemly, Paul Dressell, Kim McEachirn, Dale Barta, Bernie Dressell
and Sheri Albers. There was a "mini-blind" this month: the Silver Lining of
Being Blind.

2 Kim McEachirn moved to approve the March minutes as
emailed; Emily Pennington seconded. The motion passed.

3 Emily Pennington presented this month's Treasurer's
Report. Paul Dressell moved to approve the report; Kim McEachirn seconded.
The motion passed.

4 Christopher Sabine presented the report of the
Membership Committee, which met by telephone conference on April 17 2017 at
7:00 PM. In attendance were: Christopher Sabine, Lisa Hall, Dale Barta,
Walter Mitchell and Paul Dressell. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss
outreach efforts per the discussion at the March Chapter meeting.
Christopher reported that members agreed to reach out to their respective
churches and community organizations. Christopher agreed to write up a memo
to distribute to each organization concerning the NFB of Cincinnati and
requesting to conduct an introductory meeting to discuss having an outreach
event. A follow up meeting was scheduled for May 15 2017. Following the
Membership Committee Meeting, Christopher wrote up the memo and emailed it
to the Cincinnati Chapter list. After some revisions, Christopher reported
that he sent the memo to the Deacon at Assumption Parish Mt. Healthy and is
scheduled to present his proposal to the Pastoral Council at Assumption. He
has invited Lisa Hall, who agreed to attend. Deborah recommended that the
Committee draw up a list of bullet points to cover in outreach
presentations.

5 Kim McEachirn and Christopher Sabine gave a brief
report from the Recreation Committee, which met by telephone conference on
April 27 2017. The focus of discussion was the annual chapter picnic
scheduled for June 10 at Winton Woods. It was agreed that details regarding
food and other arrangements would be referred back to Committee.

6 Elif Emir Oksuz gave a brief report of the Fundraising
Committee. She indicated that the committee is planning an event at a
Buffalo Rings and Wings location locally to benefit the Ohio BELL Program.
No further details were provided at this time.

7 Sheri Albers gave a report on the 2017 BELL Program,
which is scheduled from June 25 to 30 at the Ohio State School for the Blind
in Columbus. Sheri expressed that there are ten applicants, and the
application process is closed. However, the program may accept one
additional student from Virginia. Two students are from the Greater
Cincinnati area. Several people from Cincinnati will be volunteering,
including Lisa Hall, Annie McEachirn Carson and Paula Jordan. David Perry
will also conduct a goal ball workshop at BELL. Sheri is helping Heather
Leiterman take over her duties as BELL Coordinator, as she is no longer able
to serve that capacity.

8 Sheri discussed the upcoming National Convention,
which is scheduled from July 10 to 15 in Orlando, Florida. Sheri expressed
that Richard Payne has posted and email to the Ohio-Talk Listserv regarding
convention assistance. Plans are in the works to staff the Ohio Table at
Convention this year. Deborah asked anyone who can spearhead an ad hoc
committee to represent the Cincinnati Chapter at the Ohio Table at National
Convention to contact her or Lisa Hall.

9 Sheri expressed that all is ready for the BLT Station
at the Flying Pig Half Marathon, which is scheduled for Sunday morning May 7
2017. 29 people have reportedly signed up, most of whom are from Cincinnati.

10 Sheri Albers reported that the Ohio Affiliate will be
holding its "Columbus Seminar" event at the Ohio State Capital in Columbus
on May 9 2017. The Ohio affiliate plans to discuss three key pieces of
legislation: a bill protecting the rights of blind parents, a bill bringing
the current statute regarding service animals into compliance with The
Americans with Disabilities Act and increasing penalties for discrimination
against users of service animals and legislation to establish a state
rehabilitation council. Sheri expressed that this latter issue is very
important because Ohio's current governance structure for vocational
rehabilitation is out of compliance with federal law. This bill is currently
being backed by several Ohio disability rights organizations as well as the
American Council of the Blind, and versions of the bill are pending in the
Ohio House and Senate. Sheri indicated she will have factsheets on all three
pieces of legislation posted to the Ohio-Talk Listserv in the near future.
After a brief discussion of transportation arrangements, Sheri asked anyone
planning on attending "Columbus Seminar" to contact her, so she can assign
members to various teams.

11 The Chapter moved that the meeting schedule will remain
the status quo for the time being.

12 Kim McEachirn expressed that everything is a go for the
tour of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center scheduled for May 6
2017.

13 The April 2017 meeting of the National Federation of the
Blind of Cincinnati was adjourned on May 4 2017 at approximately 9:40 PM.

Respectfully Submitted,

Christopher Sabine

Secretary

National Federation of the Blind of Cincinnati
