Meeting Minutes for March 2018

 

1.       The March 2018 meeting of the Cincinnati Chapter of the National
Federation of the Blind of Cincinnati was convened by telephone conference
by President Sheri Albers at approximately 2:02 P.M. on Saturday March 24
2018. Please note that this meeting was conducted by telephone conference
due to inclement weather in the Greater Cincinnati area. In attendance were:
Sheri Albers, Christopher Sabine, Paul Dressell, Bernie Dressell, Deanna
Lewis, Lisa Hall, Annie McEachirn Carson, Walter Mitchell, Cassandra Proud
and Paul Jordan, Gloria Robinson from the Miami Valley Chapter attended
today's meeting as a guest. Jamie Reynolds and Julie proud also attended
today's meeting as guests of the chapter.

 

2.       Walter Mitchell moved to approve the February 2018 meting minutes
as emailed. Paul Dressell seconded, and the motion passed.

 

3.       No treasurer's report was presented, as Emily Pennington was absent
from today's meeting.

 

4.       Paul Dressell moved to approve the February 2018 Treasurer's
Report. Christopher Sabine Seconded, and the motion passed with an
abstension by Walter Mitchell.

 

5.       After some discussion led by Sheri Albers, Christopher Sabine made
a motion that the Chapter limit allocations to the Sunshine Fund for Chapter
members in need to $5 and that the President and Treasurer approve all
requests for money from the Sunshine Fund with presentation of the receipt
from the member making the request. Deanna Lewis made a friendly amendment
to Christopher's motion that this amount be $10. Annie McEachirn Carson
seconded, and the motion passed.

 

6.       Christopher Sabine gave a report from the Membership Committee,
which met by telephone conference on March 15 from 7:00 to 7:45 P.M. Walter
Mitchell, Paul Dressell, Bernie Dressell, Tammy Smith and Christopher Sabine
attended. Christopher expressed that he began the meeting with a discussion
of community outreach efforts. Paul and Bernie Dressell have agreed to reach
out to contacts at the MT. Washington United Methodist Church, and Tammy
Smith has agreed to reach out to the Kenwood Baptist Church and Visions and
Voices, an organization that serves local artists with developmental
disabilities and offers arts enrichment activities and classes. Walter
Mitchell is also working with the New Prospect Baptist Church to organize an
event, and Christopher is also  assisting other members with some additional
contacts. The committee also discussed a  visit to long time Federationist
Marion King and agreed to make this visit sometime in May or june (between
the Flying Pig Marathon on May 6 and the week of the Bell Program on June 24
-29). Those interested in making the visit were asked to contact the
Committee. Christopher moved that the Chapter allocate $10 each year for
membership dues for Marion King in perpetuity. Walter Mitchell seconded, and
the motion passed. Sheri expressed that she would like the Chapter to
participate in a community service event for Matthew 25: Ministries or a
related event. Christopher agreed to follow up with Matthew: 25 Ministries.
The next Membership Committee meeting is scheduled for April 19 at 7:00 PM
by telephone conference.

 

7.       Walter Mitchelll gave a report from the Fundraising Committee
regarding Chapter Fundraising efforts. He expressed that he is dropping
plans for a Chili Cookoff at the st. Bernard Municipal Building in April, as
he has been unable to continue organizing the event for personal reasons.
Sheri expressed that she has reached out to David Perry, who has secured a
refund of the $300 deposit for the event.  Gloria Robinson discussed the
possibility of having a spaghetti / Italian dinner fundraiser at some point
in the future and discussed a similar annual event through the Miami Valley
Chapter that she has been organizing since 2009. After some discussion,
Walter Mitchell moved that the Chapter move forward with plans for a
spaghetti dinner at the St. Bernard Municipal Building, spearheaded by
Gloria Robinson and the Fundraising Committee. Christopher Sabine seconded,
and the motion passed.

 

8.       Deanna Lewis began a discussion of Ohio Affiliate Fundraising
activities  with an update on the Mally's Chocolate Fundraiser, which is
still ongoing. Sheri Albers expressed that raffle tickets are still being
sold for the "Piggest Raffle Ever", which is being held in conjunction with
the Flying Pig Marathon the weekend of May 5-6 2018. Paper tickets were
distributed to Chapter members at last month's meeting, and raffle tickets
are available online for $5 apiece with all proceeds going to the Ohio
Affiliate. The first prize winner will receive $5,000, and an additional
$5,000 will be donated to the charity of the winner's choice. Online raffle
tickets are available at http://www.piggestraffle.com. Sheri also reported
that 30 volunteers are nneeded to staff the "BLT" or "biggest Little Tissue"
station at Mile 9 of the Half Marathon on the morning of Sunday May 6. The
station will be located at 1501 Madison Road in the parking lot of the
building currently occupied by Cincinnati Behavioral Health. Sheri indicated
that volunteers need to arrive by 6:30 A.M. and coordinate their own private
transportation. Sheri will email the link to the online volunteer
registration application to the Ohio-Talk Listserv later this weekend.

9.       Annie McEachirn Carson reported that she would like to step down as
Chair of the Recreation Committee due to another personal commitment. Sheri
agreed to follow up with Kim McEachirn and Deanna Lewis concerning their
interest in chairing this committee.

 

 

10.   Annie McEachirn Carson expressed that she would like to organize the
"Meet the blind" event for 2018 and requested permission to contact 3CDC,
who is in charge of facility rentals at Fountain Square, to determine if
October 15 is available for facility rental and secure the location for that
date. Annie reported that she currently does not have a figure on the cost
of renting the facility, and reported that she will be unable to secure the
facilities for that date without payment to 3CDC. After some discussion, a
motion was presented by Annie McEachirn Carson that the Chapter contact 3CDC
and determine the availability of the Fountain Square facilities on October
15 2018 and that Sheri Albers allocate all necessary funds not to exceed
$200 for the rental costs necessary to secure the facilities for that date
once a specific dollar amount is determined. Walter Mitchell seconded, and
the motion passed. Annie agreed to follow up with 3CDC concerning cost and
availability of the Fountain Square facilities.

 

11.   Sheri Albers expressed that she is requesting that anyone planning to
attend Columbus Seminar, the Affiliat's legislative event, reach out to her
as soon as possible. Sheri, Affiliate President Richard Payne and the
Legislative Committee have begun assembling teams of volunteers based on
responses to an email posted to the affiliate Listserv earlier this week.
Teams will consist of two volunteers, who will try to visit all Ohio's 99
state legislators and 33 senators regarding the Affiliate's legislative
agenda. A Training day similar to Washington Seminar has been scheduled for
Monday April 9 at the Sheritan Hotel in Downtown Columbus. Thus far, Deanna
Lewis and Marianne Denning have expressed interest in attending from the
Cincinnati area. Marianne is the at-large representative from Cincinnati.

 

12.                           Sheri Albers expressed that the 2018 Ohio Bell
Program is scheduled for June 24-29 at the Ohio State School for the blind
in Columbus. The coordinator of this year's event is Rachel Kuntz. Rachel
will be sending an email to the Ohio-Talk Listserv with the registration
application in the near future. Four students are currently signed up for
this year's program.

 

13.                           Paul Dressell led a iscussion of the article"
The Dentist and the Eye Doctor" from the March 2018 Braille Monitor.
Christopher Sabine agreed to lead next month's Braille Monitor article
discussion.

 

14.                           The March 2018 meeting of the National
Federation of the Blind of Cincinnati was adjourned at 3:58 P.M. on March 24
2018.
