5. Gloria Robinson gave a report from the Fundraising Committee. She
indicated that she is still taking orders for Double Good Popcorn in which
50% of sales will go to the Chapter. All orders are due to Gloria by the
next Chapter meeting on April 27. Plans are also still in the works for a
flea market event in late summer or early fall following National
Convention. Deanna Lewis expressed that the Clovernook Center has concerns
about renting out the Procter Center for the Italian Dinner Fundraiser
slated for June 15 due to damage to the facilities by other groups renting
the space. It was agreed that the Committee will find a new location and
reschedule if necessary.
6. Sheri Albers expressed that she has received the online volunteer
registration for the annual Ohio Affiliate fundraiser at the Flying Pig Half
Marathon from event organizers and will be posting it to the Ohio-Talk
Listserv. Members of the Ohio Affiliate will be staffing a station at mile
nine of the Flying Pig Half Marathon on Madison Road in Cincinnati-referred
to as the "BLT" or "Best Little Tissue" station. The event is scheduled for
Sunday May 5 2019 from 6:30 to 9:30 A.M. Volunteers will be handing out
puffs tissues to runners at the event. The Ohio Affiliate is looking for
20-25 volunteers in order to receive a $500 donation from event organizers.
Sheri expressed that 12,000 runners are expected to participate in the Half
Marathon this year. This is the 21st year for the Flying Pig Marathon and
the fourth year in which the National Federation of the Blind of Ohio has
been a sponsor. As a sponsor of the Flying Pig Marathon, the Ohio affiliate
also has access to the "Piggest Raffle Ever." This is a raffle in which
participants can purchase a ticket either through a web site or buy paper
tickets and "adopt a pig." The cost of each ticket is $5-with all proceeds
going to the sponsoring organization. The first prize is $5,000-with the
sponsoring organization also receiving a $5,000 donation from event
organizers. The second and third prizes are a two-year lease on a Toyota
Prius and a $1,500 excursion in Cincinnati. Links to the online raffle have
been posted to the Ohio-Talk and Cinci-Talk Listservs as well as the Chapter
Facebook Page.
7. Sheri reminded all Chapter members of the leadership and legislative
event scheduled in Columbus from April 5-9 2019. She expressed that Ohio
Representative Erica Crawley (D-Columbus) and Richard Brown (D-Canal
Winchester) are introducing the Affiliate's parental rights bill and
accessible prescription legislation respectively. As indicated previously,
this event is divided into two separate modules. All Chapter members
interested in attending either or both modules of the leadership seminar
should have been contacted individually by today's meeting.
8. After a speech by Affiliate President Richard Payne, Sheri Albers
indicated that she would like to reinstitute a discussion of an article from
The Braille Monitor each month. Paul Jordan agreed to lead the discussion
for the April Chapter meeting. Gloria Robinson also agreed to provide
refreshments for all monthly Chapter meetings moving forward.
