Meeting Minutes for April, 2023


1.         The April, 2023 meeting of the National Federation of the Blind of Ohio, Cincinnati Chapter was convened by President Gloria Robinson at approximately 7:05 P.M. on Sunday, April 23, 2023 by telephone conference. Attending today's meeting were President Gloria Robinson, Lisa Hall, Tammy Smith, Dave Perry, Walter Mitchell, Christopher Sabine, Tapeka Turner, Akeelah Cade, Frank Bragassa, Tammy McRae, Gary Warren, Chris Windham, and Haley Thurston.

2.         President Gloria Robinson announced to all Chapter members that the Cincinnati Chapter Spring Ball is scheduled for next Saturday, April 29 at 6:00 P.M. all Chapter members were asked to R.S.V.P. to Gary Warren if they plan to attend. There is also a "meet and greet" set for Friday, April 28 at 6:00 P.M. at the O'Charley's located at 5075 Crookshank road, Cincinnati, Ohio.

3.         Emily Pennington gave this month's Treasurer's Report. Gary Warren moved to accept the Treasurer's Report. Christopher Sabine seconded, and the motion passed.

4.         Gary Warren moved to accept the March, 2023 meeting minutes. Dave Perry seconded. The motion passed.

5.         President Gloria Robinson, as this month's Transportation Committee discussion, asked all Chapter members, if they were aware of a meeting at the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SORTA) this Tuesday, April 25 at 6:00 P.M. After some discussion, Walter Mitchell agreed to attend the meeting to discuss ongoing concerns with Metro and ACCESS and report back to the Chapter.

5. Walter Mitchell gave an update from the Community Outreach Committee, expressing that he plans to hold a meeting during the second week of May for anyone interested in participating. He promised to post further information about the committee to the Cinci-talk Listserv.

6.         President Gloria Robinson indicated that the Chapter is in the process of raising funds for members to attend the National Federation of the Blind Annual convention, which is set for July 1-6 at the Hilton Americas Hotel / George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. Rooms are $119 to $145 per night. President Robinson reported that she will meet with the Fundraising Committee to see if it would sell any items to help cover the cost. President Robinson also alluded to this year's State Convention, set for November 17-19 at the Worthington Hilton Doubletree Hotel in Columbus. She indicated that she does not mind renting a van and driver to provide transportation, but more members need to participate in fundraising activities to cover the cost. President Robinson expressed that members will need to give back to the community in order to receive support to attend State Convention and expressed that she will be forming a committee of three members along with Christopher Sabine, Chapter Secretary, to determine which members will receive support based on the number of Chapter meetings they attend. Members will need to attend at least half of the year's Chapter meetings to receive assistance. Also, members riding the van to State Convention will be limited to one bag per person. President Robinson also expressed that she would like to see the Chapter send out "thank you" card to recognize members who donated to the Chapter.

7.         President Gloria Robinson went on to discuss the Chapter's upcoming Spring Ball, which is set for this Saturday, April 29 from 6:00 to 11:00 P.M. She asked all Chapter members to assist with marketing the event. President Robinson, along with Gary Warren and Dave perry, will be featured on a broadcast on Radio Reading Services on Thursday Afternoon, April 27 to discuss the national Federation of the Blind, and WXIX Channel 19 may also cover the event. Haley Thurston, Tammy Smith, and others will be greeting members at the door and handing out masks for those who request them. There will also be hand sanitizers available for attendees at each table. Chris Windham and Tammy McRae will be accepting admissions. All attendees paying by check should reach out to Emily Pennington, Treasurer, this evening. Attendees should also R.S.V.P to Gary warren if they have not done so already. The hotel will not except reservations at the previously advertised $99 room rate after 11:59 this evening. Reservations can be made for the night of April 28 or 29 at the Quality Inn at 800 W. 8th Street, Cincinnati, Ohio. President Gloria Robinson expressed that she is responsible for the venue, so everyone needs to be on their best behavior during the event. Both alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages will be served, and there will be door prizes and an auction. Dave Perry expressed that the spring Ball will have a positive impact on the community and build the Cincinnati Chapter, encouraging all Chapter members to attend and help out wherever possible.

8.         on other topics related to Fundraising, Dave Perry indicated that the Chapter Popcorn Fundraiser is still ongoing.

9.         Following additional discussion, the April, 2023 meting of the National Federation of the Blind of Ohio, Cincinnati Chapter was adjourned at approximately 7:45 P.M. on Sunday, April 23, 2023. The next meeting will be held by telephone conference on Saturday, May 72, 2023 from 1:30 to 3:30 P.M.
