Meeting Minutes for August 19, 2023

1. The August, 2023 meeting of the National Federation of the Blind of Ohio, Cincinnati Chapter was convened by President Gloria Robinson at approximately 1:35 P.M. on Saturday, August 19, 2023 by telephone conference. Attending today's meeting were President Gloria Robinson, Gary Warren, Frank Bragassa, Emily Pennington, Dave Perry, Christopher Sabine, Tammy McRae, Tammy Smith, Haley Thurston, Walter Mitchell, Mohammed Ikramullah, Chris Windham, and Tapeka Turner.

2. Dave Perry began today's meeting with a Fundraising Committee Report discussing the Chapter's upcoming end-of-summer fundraiser set for Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 6:00 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Price Hill (4109 W. Eighth Street, Cincinnati). All members are invited and encouraged to attend. Gary Warren continued the discussion with a summary of plans for the Fundraiser, which will include entertainment and an auction. Admission is $10 per person, and hotdogs, hamburgers, fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, chicken alfredo, and dessert will be served. Alcoholic drinks will also be available for $3 apiece. The purpose of this fundraiser is to raise money to send members to the Ohio State Convention, set for November 17-19 in the Doubletree Worthington Hotel in Columbus. Gloria also indicated that plans are to hold an Italian dinner in October to celebrate Blind Equality Achievement Month in conjunction with the Cincinnati Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI). The dinner will consist of lasagna or spaghetti, garlic bread, salad, dessert, and drink. Admission will be $10 per person. A proclamation will be read at the event. While this event will be scheduled for a Saturday in October at the Price Hill Knights of Columbus Hall, an exact date was not announced at today's meeting. Plans are for the Chapter to have a table at State Convention, where body oils, jewelry, and other items will be sold, and Convention participants will have the chance to win a Bluetooth speaker. Gloria will be seeking donations for the Italian Dinner and the van for State Convention.

3. President Gloria Robinson also discussed other statewide fundraising efforts that may be of interest to Chapter members. In particular, the Ohio Diabetes Action Network (DAN) is holding a raffle in which participants can win one of three grand prizes of $300, $200, or $100. Tickets are $10 each.

4. Dave Perry gave a report from the Membership Committee. He reported no new membership updates at today's meeting but did enter into a discussion about active participation. He expressed that all members should try to attend and participate in all fundraising projects, such as the upcoming End-of-Summer Fundraiser, the Italian Dinner, and State Convention. He concluded his report by emphasizing that all members are important to the Federation family and promised to support in any way he can.

5. President Gloria Robinson expressed that Covid-19 is still out in the community. The room where the Fundraiser is taking place is large enough so that everyone can keep safe. However, during a meeting with the Chapter's Board of Directors earlier this month, it was decided that the Chapter will continue to hold its meetings by telephone conference until the end of the 2023 Calendar year. Christopher Sabine moved that the Chapter continue to hold its meetings virtually until the end of the year. Chris Windham seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.

6. Walter Mitchell discussed the raffle that the Ohio Diabetes Action Network is conducting, which was discussed earlier. Proceeds from the raffle will cover the cost for members to attend the National Diabetes Action Network Conference, which will be held in Missouri in Spring, 2024. Walter expressed that Dan will hold its meetings every other month, but specific dates have not yet been announced.

7. Walter Mitchell gave a report from the Community Activities Committee, which has not held any meetings to date due to personal issues. The committee is chaired by Walter Mitchell and co-chaired by Chris Windham.

8. Emily Penington gave this month's Treasurer's Report. Tapeka Turner moved to accept the Treasurer's Report as presented. Frank Bragassa seconded. The motion passed.

9. President Gloria Robinson gave an update from the Community Outreach Committee. She expressed that she plans to meet with Dave Perry concerning opportunities to speak about the local Chapter and the Federation to schools through the Everybody Counts program. She also expressed that the state Board meeting is scheduled at the Worthington Doubletree Hotel on September 23.

10. President Gloria Robinson and Christopher Sabine discussed their experiences at the National Federation of the Blind Annual Convention in Houston, Texas.

11. Tammy smith reported that she is conducting a bake sale for Visionaries and Voices on September 14 and donating the proceeds to the Chapter.

12. Christopher Sabine announced that the Ohio Affiliate is conducting its annual Gavel Awards presentation at State Convention. The Gavel Awards recognize the contributions of members of each chapter and division of the Affiliate to the Federation and the community at large. Christopher has asked that all Chapter members have their information concerning their community contributions to him as soon as possible. Christopher also expressed that the Ohio Affiliate's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee will be hosting him for a workshop on Optic Nerve Hypoplasia on September 27 at 6:00 P.M. the information has already been posted to all of the Federation's national listservs.
