Sprint takes over state relay service, adds conference transcripts

Colorado relay service provides way to communicate by phone for those with disabilities

On July 1, Sprint will take over Colorado's Telecommunication Relay Services , which enables people with hearing, sight and speech disabilities to communicate on the phone.

Affected residents can dial 711 at any time to use the service via a special text telephone and third-party operator, according to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission, which administers the service. Captioned telephone calls are increasing for those who are hard of hearing, according to the commission.

AT&T, which previously held the contract, has exited the niche. Sprint's contract goes through June 30, 2018. Sprint said that when it takes over, Colorado residents also will have access to Relay Conference Captioning, which provides a transcript of meetings comment by comment.
