Folks, unfortunately H.R. 620 passed today by a 225 to 192 vote in the
House. I am not sure how our Colorado reps broke out butlike the whole
vote, it was probably mostly along party lines. This is a defeat for our
community but a much slimmer margin of victory than originally predicted.
Thus, our efforts were effective. Now the task will be to defeat this in
the Senate where it faces stiffer opposition. First of all, 60 votes will
be needed to close debate and it is unlikely that 60 Senators will support
closing debate and moving to a vote with the Republicans holding a very
slim, 51 to 49 majority. Second, as far as I know, there is no Senate
companion bill to H.R. 620 which also indicates less support for this
measure in the Senate. Nevertheless, this does not mean that we go to sleep
and cease our efforts. We will need to work hard to make sure that the
Senate does not pass this or something like it. Thanks for everyone's
advocacy and we will keep marching forward!
Scott
