Wednesday, February 5
12:15 to 4:00 p.m.
Old Supreme Court Chambers, 3rd Floor, north of the elevators

Be sure to be there next Wednesday! We don’t want the 100 members of
the Colorado General Assembly to forget who the National Federation of
the Blind of Colorado is, and that we speak for ourselves! And there
are a couple of new members to meet as well.

The chamber is open for us to enter at 12:15, and we’ll want to get
started no later than 12:30, so please arrive early. We will likely
have some special guests joining us!

What are we going to discuss this year, when we don’t have a specific
bill ourselves for the first time in a couple of years? Well, there
are still plenty of things we need to be aware of, and we want to make
sure our elected representatives know about our interests and
concerns.

First, we always, always, talk about funding for NFB Newsline. It’s
one of the most critical ways we are able to keep up with things of
importance to us as citizens of Colorado.

Next, a coalition of Colorado groups have been working on a bill to
end subminimum wages in Colorado. Denver did it, and the rest of the
state can too. A bill hasn’t been introduced yet, but we can
definitely support the concept of putting an end to this exploitation
of Colorado workers with disabilities. And we can get members ready
for a bill when it comes.

This week a bilateral group introduced a bill regarding RTD. We need
to examine this more closely, but we definitely have to be interested
in this legislation. Also, the concept of requiring that Colorado
pharmacies across the board provide accessible prescription
information is in the planning, and this will affect blind Coloradans
significantly if it becomes law. We will be working with the sponsor
and others to ensure that any bill that is to be considered will be a
bill we can support, and brings greater access to prescription info
for all of us.

So, you can see that we really need to be visible to members of the
Legislature and their staffers. Join us on Wednesday!

And wear comfortable shoes!

Dan
