We ran the Zoom Meeting on my MacBook Pro and used its internal microphone. There are factors that normally effect the sound at The Commons meeting room we normally use. The room used at The Commons has a false feeling over the table and the ceiling, containing utilities and a cement ceiling, was around the rest of the room. The false ceiling covers the majority of the room except for approximately four feet around the room. There are two walls made of drywall containing white boards and artwork on the north and south; the eastern wall is made of masonry and contains two large windows and the west wall is entirely glass (including the two doors to enter the room).

I have always held the perspective that the quality of the speaker depends upon where they sit; do they sit at the table, near the ends of the table, or do they pull their chair near the wall. People speaking at the table are easier to comprehend especially if they have a voice that projects as does my voice. Furthermore, if people sit away from the table, the ceiling with the exposed utilities (pipes and ducts) creates an echo and the sound can even be blocked by the false ceiling over the table. Having the doors open during the meeting can also be a factor. Especially if there are activities occurring that are loud by nature. I would say that overall the sound quality is good. People who are hard of hearing or deaf may want to select their seat at the table carefully such as in the center.

Mr. Chong and I tested the sound from various angles in the room before the meeting while I was the only person present. What matters is where the rubber meets the road when more individuals with different voice qualities come into play. We will work to improve the hybrid experience so everyone is heard, and everyone can hear.

Curtis,

Appologies for the delaid reply. This somehow got lost in a mountain of emails I received throughout the week.

Overall, I think it was a success. We used a laptop (not sure exactly what the microphone was) and had a good Wi-fi connection. As far as taking questions we just made sure to ask whether anyone who was online had questions.

I suspect it would have been significantly more difficult though if our group had been much larger.
I am certainly open to any feedback from anyone who was in attendance as to how they think it went or what we could have done better.

Thanks,
Cody

Howdy Cody:

I’m keenly interested in how well this hybrid thing works for you folks. What are you using for a microphone? What about taking comments/questions from people who are not in attendance physically? Is there a decent Wi-Fi connection where you are meeting at the Commons?

Thanks for sharing.

Sincerely,

Curtis Chong
