― TRAFFIC ADVISORY ―
Week of Jan 23
Military Access, Mobility & Safety Improvement Project
Daytime Paving and Nighttime Barrier Set on I-25

COLORADO SPRINGS — Colorado Department of Transportation and Contractor SEMA Construction, Inc. completed the southbound traffic switch, striping, installation of the lane shift advance warning signs, and paving the various emergency pullouts.

Commuters will notice a lane shift on northbound I-25 beginning at Mile Post 128 and continuing to MP 135. Crews have been constructing stream diversions at Dry Wash (MP 128.34) and Clover Ditch (MP 131.2), saw cutting the bridge decks, removing the bridge guardrail and bridge overhangs.

Pothole pavement patching is expected to be performed north- and southbound on I-25 between MP 127 and MP 135, on Monday, Jan. 24, 2022 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Commuters will experience right lane closures throughout the corridor. In addition, crews will be setting barrier nightly on southbound I-25 (MP 131-127) on Sunday, Jan. 23 through Thursday, Jan. 27.

Motorists are encouraged to register for text alerts by Texting MAMSIP to 888-970-9665

A Courtesy Patrol will be driving the work zone and will respond to incidents when notified. Hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday and holidays.

Erosion control efforts and waterline relocation is expected to begin the last week in January on Charter Oak Ranch Road. Traffic impacts will be minimal.

Commuters will experience narrowing of lanes on I-25, please eliminate your distractions so you and your passengers arrive safely to your destination.
TRAFFIC IMPACTS

I-25 single lane closures and shoulder closures between approximately South Academy Boulevard and Santa Fe Avenue (MP 135 – 127).

  * Monday, Jan. 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., alternating lane closures north- and southbound on I-25, to allow crews to patch potholes.
  * Sunday, Jan. 23 from at 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., left lane closures southbound I-25, to allow crews to continue to set temporary barriers.
  * Monday, Jan. 24 to Thursday, Jan. 27, between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., left lane closure southbound I-25, to allow crews to set temporary barrier.
  * Speed limit reduction to 55 MPH during night construction hours and emergency daytime work. Speed reduction will be enforced by State Patrol.
  *   Eleven-foot lane width restrictions
  * South Academy Boulevard near I-25
  * Monday, Jan. 24 – Friday, Jan. 28, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., daytime right shoulder closures east- and westbound on South Academy Blvd.

In the future, travelers can expect daytime and nighttime traffic impacts. Intermittent daytime and nighttime lane closures should be expected. Traffic fines will be doubled in the work zone. Motorists should slow down as they approach the work zones, drive with caution, allow extra space between vehicles, and give themselves extra travel time. Dates of work are weather permitting

This work is part of the Military Access, Mobility & Safety Improvement Project (MAMSIP). MAMSIP is comprised of four discrete road projects in the Pikes Peak region, all of which are strategically important in the movement of personnel and equipment between nationally significant military facilities.

Project Overview

Interstate-25 – Safety and efficiency improvements
The improvements to I-25 addressed in this project are located along an approximately 7.5-mile segment of the corridor beginning at South Academy Boulevard and extending to the Santa Fe Avenue (CO 85/87) exit at Fountain (MP 128), which exits to Gate 19 of Fort Carson.

  *   Replacement of two bridges crossing over South Academy Boulevard;
  *   Widening of both inside and outside shoulders and installing safety improvements;

  *   Concrete surface treatment overlay to provide an improved riding surface for this 7.5-mile segment;
  *   Installation of median barrier the entire length of this corridor;

  * Rehab and widening work on four bridges along the corridor, and

  * Installation of I-25 Southbound deceleration lane at the interchange with Colorado Highway 16.

Safety Benefits
The safety enhancements relate to the potential to reduce crashes, improve infrastructure, and address physical deficiencies that contribute to crashes in the corridor. CDOT conducted a safety assessment for the corridor to evaluate the magnitude and nature of safety problems and analyze the causes of crashes.

The proposed transportation improvements are mitigation measures to reduce crashes and improve safety in the corridor. It is estimated that the delivery of the MAMSIP project will, over its’ twenty years of operation, result in fewer deaths, injuries, and crashes on the four corridors the project addresses.

Our approximately 3,000 employees work tirelessly to reduce the rate and severity of crashes and improve the safety of all modes of transportation. The department manages more than 23,000 lane miles of highway, more than 3,000 bridges and 35 mountain passes. CDOT also manages grant partnerships with a range of agencies, including metropolitan planning organizations, local governments and airports. It also operates Bustang, the state-owned interregional express bus service. Gov. Jared Polis has charged CDOT to further build on the state’s intermodal mobility options.

Remember: Slow For The Cone Zone
The following tips are to help you stay safe while traveling through maintenance and construction work zones.

  * Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
  * Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
  * Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
  *   Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
  * Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
  * Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  * Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  * Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  * Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  * Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
  *   Be patient!
