Poudre Valley meet up for blind and low vision of all ages
Tuesday, May 24, 2022, 5:30 PM-7:30 PM Red Robin restaurant 601 E. Harmony
Rd Fort Collins, Colorado.
The National Federation of The Blind Of Colorado is inviting all people who
are blind, low vision, and their families to our first gathering since
before the pandemic. The need to share experiences, learn about access
technologies, and available services for people who are blind in the Fort
Collins area is profound. The National Federation of The Blind of Colorado
has chapters throughout the state. The organization also supports several
special interest divisions such as Colorado Association of Blind Students,
Parents and Teachers of Blind Children, National Association of Blind
Lawyers, Colorado Association of Blind Seniors, The Deaf-Blind Division,
Colorado Association of Guide Dog Users, The Diabetic Action Network and
others. The organization is both a self-help and civil rights organization.
According to Jessica Beecham, president National Federation Of The Blind Of
Colorado, "for many years, we have had a strong organization of people who
are blind or low vision throughout the Greely, Loveland, and Fort Collins
region of the state. But students graduate and move away. Many long-time
elderly members are no longer with us. We know of new parents of blind
children who have recently moved to the area." Beecham, a blind entrepreneur
herself and a long-distance runner, continued, "whether a person has
recently lost vision or has been blind for a long time, the camaraderie,
support, and resources of The National Federation Of The Blind Of Colorado
has truly changed lives. This meet-up is an opportunity to share a positive
philosophy of blindness. It's a chance for our organization to learn the
needs and wants of blind and visually impaired people of the Poudre Valley.
We are not an organization speaking for the blind. We are an organization of
blind people speaking for ourselves."
The NFBCO invites anyone interested in learning more about the training we
provide at the Colorado Center for The Blind in Littleton, blind student
activities, our blind senior in charge programs, and cutting-edge access
technologies to break bread with us at the Red Robin beginning at 5:30. It's
an informal event. Get there when you are able. There is no cost except for
what you order from the Red Robin menu. There will be door prizes.
The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness need not be the
characteristic that defines us or our dreams. You can live the life you
want. Together with love, hope, and determination, we transform dreams into
reality.
