16th Street Mall Project Update

We have received requests for updates on the 16th Street Mall renovation schedule, and we’re here to answer you!

When will the renovation be done?

We will begin opening blocks along the new, revitalized Mall in the summer of 2024, and the project is planned for completion in fall 2025.

We've updated the website with schedule information for each block<https://cig-pr.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=fc34ba15e6547b8d998f63f6a&id=dd71443f37&e=0e4069ae0b>.

Late this year, we will begin the transition to Phase 2 (what does this look like?<https://cig-pr.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=fc34ba15e6547b8d998f63f6a&id=115952ee24&e=0e4069ae0b>).

By next spring the first two blocks – from Market to Lawrence – will have fences down and enter Phase 3 (what does this look like?<https://cig-pr.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=fc34ba15e6547b8d998f63f6a&id=ab63d33175&e=0e4069ae0b>). Some small-scale work such as the installation of seating areas or play structures will happen after fences are removed, but this work will be much less disruptive and only last one to two days at a time.

By the end of 2024, more than half of the blocks under construction will have fences down and be open for public use as they await small-scale finishing touches.

Why has the schedule been adjusted?

Complex underground utilities, storm systems that were determined to have historic significance and global supply chain issues impacted the project. As a result, utility work has taken longer than originally planned.

What are you doing to get back on track?

Earlier this year, the team implemented the following measures based on what we learned:

  * Expedited the relocation of complex utilities in advance of construction
  * Reduced the footprint of construction fencing to minimize business impacts
  * Expanded proactive measures to identify underground conditions in advance of work

These mitigations are working, and we are:

  * Adding more crews and continuing our “two front” approach to get work done in more areas of the Mall simultaneously
  * Resequencing the work to minimize lag time between construction activities

What are you doing to support businesses?

Since the start of construction, Denver Economic Development & Opportunity (DEDO) and the Downtown Denver Partnership (DDP) have administered a small business support program to connect businesses in the project area to funding and other resources. Throughout the program time period, the partners have listened to business owners’ ideas for continuously improving the program, and they are actively expanding their business support to reflect this input.

RTD Free MallRide

The RTD Free MallRide continues to run during the 16th Street Mall Project, rerouted to 15th and 17th streets until the project is complete. The detour is currently from Wazee Street to Civic Center Station. The RTD Free MallRide will experience additional detours from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 6, due to the ¡Viva! Streets! event in downtown Denver. During this time, the MallRide will turn off of 17th Street to Tremont Place, Tremont Place to 15th Street, then resume its normal route to Union Station. During the community event, customers traveling toward Union Station can board the Free MallRide shuttle on Tremont at 16th Street.
