This summer, the first of the new, revitalized blocks will begin to open along the Mall! Here is a sneak peek of some of the fun, interactive structures and elements that the project team has designed to make the 16th Street Mall a truly unique experience. Each of the elements shown above will bring joy to the 16th Street Mall in their own way.

  * Grasslands (top left): This immersive ode to the Colorado plains will provide seating and sound features.
  * Hive (top right): A play feature providing an educational attraction for children and families to gather around.
  * Trout (bottom right): Representing the Colorado River's native Cutthroat Trout, this feature will provide unique seating and photo opportunities.
  * Scattered Leaves (bottom left): This interactive, leaf-shaped seating structure will light up and make sound as it is used.

In addition to these exciting features, the new Mall will house a variety of places to sit and gather. Geometric shade structures will stand over cafe tables and chairs for dining. Aesthetic benches, vibrant planters, and relaxing Adirondack loungers will be placed at various locations along 16th Street — making the Mall a welcoming and engaging place to be. To see details on seating areas and how all these exciting elements will be organized, visit the website<https://cig-pr.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=fc34ba15e6547b8d998f63f6a&id=8864207489&e=0e4069ae0b>.

Maintaining 16th Street: Ice Melt Use Prohibited

As the project progresses and new blocks begin to open, it is important to know how to properly maintain 16th Street. Due to their negative impacts on the new pavers, drainage system, and trees, the use of the following materials is prohibited on the Mall:

  *   De-icing salts
  *   De-icing chemicals
  *   Rock salt
  *   Pre-mixed sand & salt mixtures
  * Any other substances intended to chemically melt ice

If necessary, the use of generic traction sand on icy patches will be permitted but should be used sparingly. Large quantities may become a slip hazard once the ice is gone and can also clog the drainage system underneath the pavers.

Please reach out to Vince Martinez (vmartinez at downtowndenver.com<mailto:vmartinez at downtowndenver.com>) at the Downtown Denver Partnership with any questions. Thank you in advance for your efforts in maintaining the 16th Street Mall!

Transition to Phase 2 Between Larimer and Lawrence

[https://mcusercontent.com/fc34ba15e6547b8d998f63f6a/images/857d9f0c-4c4f-06bf-5512-de4224139b12.jpg]

As soon as the week of Feb. 12, Phase 2 of construction will begin between Larimer and Lawrence streets. This phase includes installing the new granite pavers on the sidewalks, and will result in a fencing layout change. This work is expected to last 3-4 months.

You can expect:

  * The fence between Larimer and Lawrence streets will enclose the north and south sidewalks, as well as part of the center transitway, for paver installation.
  * Pedestrians will be routed to a walkway down the center transitway, and business access will be maintained through five-foot walkways extending from the center pedestrian walkway to business entrances on both sides of 16th Street. See a general example above.
  * Business access will be maintained at all times. Wayfinding signage will be installed on the fencing to direct pedestrians to businesses.

Intersection Closure at Stout and 16th Street

As soon as Monday, Feb. 19, the intersection of Stout Street and the 16th Street Mall will temporarily close as crews begin Mall improvement activities including utility, traffic signal, and lighting infrastructure installation across the intersection. This work is scheduled to last approximately three months. You can find detour information linked here<https://cig-pr.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=fc34ba15e6547b8d998f63f6a&id=cca12458e1&e=0e4069ae0b>.

You can expect:
Stout will become a two-way street between 15th and 16th streets and between 16th and 17th streets during the intersection closure, with a U-turn required at the 16th Street Mall intersection.

  * Business and residential access, including access to parking structures, loading docks and surface lots will be maintained. The majority of access points will be right-in, right-out movements only — we will communicate exceptions with buildings directly.
  * Crosswalk closures will occur throughout the intersection closure, with three of the four crosswalks open at all times.
  * Light rail service will not be affected.
  * A temporary traffic signal will be installed at 15th Street.
  * On-street parking will be limited along Stout Street.
  * The intersection will remain closed 24/7 for the duration of the work.
  * Travel delays are possible so please allow extra time.
