[Colorado-Talk] FW: Rideshare in Colorado Is at Risk

I am living in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and can provide a little more information on what happened here because it is my understanding that this has been a somewhat general pattern around the country. In general, this was a management/labor dispute with the Minneapolis city council implementing a law that raised compensation for drivers and added other controls as well. Many of the same tactics were used that often occur in such labor disputes. Uber did stay, in the end, but a compromise state law was passed and fares were increased as well. It is my understanding that in other cases, Uber has left and then returned after a period of time, and some other smaller rideshare companies were ready to move in here if Uber had left. It is impossible to know what would have happened if no compromises were made.
While I tend to lean toward supporting labor in general, in the case of Minneapolis, this was kind of a different sort of dispute. It was brought about by a governmental body rather than by a union. There was a small group of drivers as well who supported the governmental position. Also, we have not come to terms in this country with how we evaluate employees who are actually contractors. All of these things made it difficult for us as an affiliate to take a position for or against. We urged negotiations and made it known that the lack of rideshare services would have an impact on us, but that it would not have the impact on us that Uber tended to portray to scare us and everybody else. We objected to one ad put out by Uber, and they actually retracted it. Good luck. ,
Best regards,
Steve Jacobson

Yes, that sounds more than fishy. I could be wrong, but it certainly seems like somebody is unhappy with Uber and try to put this out without any thought for how it may impact ride share users. One of the warning signs is that whoever created this alert failed to include other rideshare companies such as LYFT. There’s no ways that a law like this would be created just for Uber. It would have to cover the entire ride share group of companies.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Thank you and best regards

This looked a little fishy to me as well. I thought I recognized it from Minneapolis last year. My brother-in-law lives up there, and according to him, Uber is alive and well in spite of all its threats to disappear.

I have gotten emails from Uber as well. Last year Uber threatened to leave Minneapolis if they did not change several practices to meet the city’s new rules for rideshares operating in Minneapolis. I know from my family in Minneapolis that Uber is still there.
My understanding of the law is that it will require video for all rides. This is the same as riding the pubic bus. We should welcome this as it will provide more proof of the misdeeds of Uber drivers and their interactions with dog guides.

Greetings:
Uber is pulling out all the stops on this one. I find it disappointing that it has not done this for the discrimination that guide dog users continue to face from ride share providers in Colorado.
Honestly, I doubt that Uber will really pull out of our state if the bill is passed.
Cordially,

Act Now to Save Rideshare in Colorado
Hi Theresa,
Your Uber rides in Colorado are at risk. A new bill, HB25-1291, will force Uber to shut down statewide if passed in its current form.
If passed, this bill would:
•
Invade your privacy: The bill mandates continuous audio and video recording of all rides, with no way for you to opt out.
•
Create unworkable conditions: The bill imposes impractical requirements, like prohibiting drivers from offering riders a bottle of water—and holding Uber responsible if they do.
•
Increase your costs: The bill opens the door for more frivolous lawsuits that drive up prices at a time when the cost of living is a huge issue for Coloradans.
We believe there's a better way to ensure safety and accessibility without sacrificing your privacy or forcing Uber out of the state, and we’re ready to find a middle ground.
But time is running out: the legislative session ends May 7th, so your immediate action is crucial.
Click “Take Action” below to tell your lawmakers to keep Uber in Colorado.
Thanks,
The Uber team
