The 16th Street Mall Project team is deeply saddened by the violent acts that occurred near 16th Street this past weekend. Our hearts go out to the victims, their loved ones and the entire downtown community.

Safety remains a top priority for the project team as we continue to work closely with the City of Denver, the Downtown Denver Partnership and the Denver Police Department to promote security on and around the project site.

In the wake of this tragedy, we remain committed to creating a welcoming and vibrant 16th Street as we move toward project completion this year.

Phase 2 Transition Between Champa and Stout Streets

Phase 2 of construction on Block 6 between Champa and Stout streets is scheduled to begin as soon as today (Wednesday, Jan. 15) and last three to four months. This phase includes installing the new granite pavers on the sidewalks and will require a change in the fencing layout. The image above is a general example of Phase 2 work and fencing.

The first thing you will see is crews beginning to adjust the fence gradually to achieve the layout described below. Signage will direct pedestrians to business access points.

You can expect:

  * East half of the block:
     * North and south sidewalks enclosed with pedestrians routed to the center transitway
     * Five-foot walkways will provide access to businesses
  * West half of the block:
     * South sidewalk enclosed and north sidewalk open
     * Five-foot walkways will provide access to businesses
  * This fencing configuration will move as work progresses, and five-foot walkways leading to businesses may be closed intermittently outside of business hours for work occurring in those areas. Business access will always be maintained while businesses are open.
  * Wayfinding signage will be installed on the fencing to direct pedestrians to businesses.

Sawcutting & Demolition

This activity may be noisy at times as sawcutting and demolition breaks up the concrete slab, but the project team will stay within the City’s noise ordinance as we recognize we are working in close proximity to businesses and residents. All construction activities are schedule and weather-dependent and subject to change.

A noise variance was approved in January 2024 which allows work to take place throughout the night under specific circumstances<https://cig-pr.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=fc34ba15e6547b8d998f63f6a&id=48114b567d&e=0e4069ae0b>. Due to schedule and sequencing, not all active blocks will have activities occurring at all times.
