Hello everyone:

The following email comes from Raul Gallegos, president of the National
Association of Guide Dog Users. Coloradans who use rideshare and who have
encountered discriminatory behavior from Uber drivers because of their guide
dogs will welcome this opportunity to hear about the new self-identification
option that is now available in the latest version of the Uber app.

I have taken the liberty of cleaning up important links that are included in
the email so that they will be easier to activate if you choose to do so.

Kind regards,

Curtis Chong

Subject: Uber Self-ID feature update

Hello everyone. Please share this wherever appropriate.

Last night, January 30, 2025, NAGDU hosted a town hall, facilitated by Al
Elia, NAGDU board member, regarding the Uber Self-ID project. Our guest was
Briana Gilmore from Uber. Briana provided an overview of what Self-ID is,
how it's used, what it's meant to help with, and how riders can optionally
opt-in to use it.

I am happy to report that this feature is ready for use. Please note, this
feature is completely optional, and it can be disabled at any time. To get
started, open your Uber app, go to Account, then Settings, then
Accessibility, then Service Animal, and follow the prompts. Please note that
in the edit field where you type in how your service animal helps you, there
is a 20-character limit. Unfortunately, this might not be obvious. For me,
typing the two words, guide dog, was enough. If for some reason, you are not
able to see this feature, or the buttons in this area of the app are not
reading correctly with Voice Over and/or Talk Back, you may need to remove
and reinstall the Uber app to fix this.

We will be posting information, as well as an FAQ on the NAGDU page.

Meanwhile, you can listen to the recording from the following link:

If you have questions about this new feature, feel free to write the NAGDU
Board,

mboard at nagdu.org <mailto:mboard at nagdu.org> . Also, if you have any
accessibility barriers about the accessibility of the Uber app, please email
rgallegos at nagdu.org <mailto:rgallegos at nagdu.org> and provide as much
information as possible so that Uber can use the feedback provided to
address the accessibility issues reported.

Thanks everyone.
