Hi, friends!
Some of you have read my Facebook posts about my daughter over the years. She's gone to Scout camps in several western states since she was twelve, and the outdoor experiences she's had there have greatly enriched her life. She's been canoeing in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota and swimming in Flathead Lake up near the Canadian border. She's seen the Crazy Horse monument and Mount Rushmore lit up at night. She just returned from Camp Buffalo Bill near Cody, Wyoming, where she saw bison in Yellowstone, witnessed Old Faithful as it went off, and saw a grizzly bear swimming across a river.
The Scouts have come up with a fundraiser that my daughter and I are really excited about. There's nothing you have to buy that you don't want lying around your house. There's nothing to eat, so you don't have to fret about calories. You get to plant trees, but you don't have to lug them home, water them, or rake leaves. The Boy Scouts of America will plant them along the Wabash River in Southern Indiana, which is badly in need of reforestation because of erosion. How great is that!?
Follow this link for everything you need to know. Basically, twenty bucks buys a tree, and you can purchase more than one at a time. Forty percent of the money goes into my kid's Scout account to fund her further adventures. Thirty percent goes to the troop and council for camp maintenance, gear purchases, etc. The rest goes to the tree project. Not a bad split, honestly.
I'm really jazzed about this conservation effort, especially over the Fourth of July. Regardless of our political views, we can all unite to help America. 🙂
