Oh Dear Julie
I was deeply saddened to hear of Laurie’s-for that’s how I knew her-death. As you know, I'd taught Laurie piano when she was around eight-years of age and we’ve remained in touch off and on over the past almost forty years. Laurie was practically my first piano student. I always respected and admired you both. She and you were great role models for me of what good parenting with a blind child should look like. I was always impressed how Laurie-at nine or so years of age-could walk from your car to the front door with her little white cane in hand all by herself. My mother was appalled at me using a cane in high school and forbid me to use it in public until I arrived at college. My mother would have never let me walk by myself anywhere. Whereas my Mom and Dad had low expectations of me as far as mobility was concerned, and none of us ever heard of the NFB, Julie you held your daughter up to high expectations allowing Laurie to live independent with Self confidence. So many memories of us having lunch together. Laurie will always remain etched in my heart with fondness!
Take care of you, and look forward in reconnecting when the time feels right for you!!!
Let me know if and when you decide to have a service for Laurie. I’d love to come!

Dear NFB Family:
It is with profound sadness that I share the news that our daughter, Lauren Hunter, also known by her married name, Doula Jarboe, passed away on Monday, July 14, 2025. She was born with Alstrom's Syndrome, an insidious condition that over the course of her 48 years caused the loss of her vision, hearing, kidney function, and finally her ability to breathe. Through it all she met the challenges with courage and determination. Our thanks to the NFB and the Colorado Center for the Blind for the guidance, support and understanding that allowed her to live a full and independent life. Our thanks also go to Wesley Jarboe, her husband and partner in life, who assisted her with handling her complex health situation in the last few years. A memorial service may be held in the future, but is not currently planned.
Best Wishes. Julie and Bob Hunter
