It sounds like your copy of Word is opening with a default style that has Heading formatting built in. You can change that to Normal style and save it as your default template. Here’s how to do it using JAWS:

1. Open a new blank document in Word.
(Just press Control+N if Word is already open.)

2. Press Control+Shift+N
This applies the Normal style to the current paragraph.
JAWS should say: “Normal.”

3. Now make sure this becomes the default style going forward:

Press Alt+H to go to the Home tab.

Then press L (for the Styles dialog—JAWS may say “Styles.”)

Press A to open "Apply Styles".

In that dialog:

Make sure the style says Normal.

Press Alt+S to choose Modify.

4. In the Modify Style box:

Press Alt+D to check the box that says
“Add to the Quick Style list.”

Press Alt+A to check the box that says
“New documents based on this template.”

This step tells Word: From now on, open every new document using Normal style instead of Heading style.

5. Press Enter to save.

After that, close Word completely and open it again. It should now start with Normal formatting rather than headings.

If she still gets headings, the Normal template may be damaged. In that case she can:

Close Word.

Press Windows+R.

Type: winword /a

Press Enter.

If it opens normally using that, she may need to rename her template file. I can walk her through that too if needed.

Hi all I am using Microsoft Word on my computer with Jaws. Some reason every time I open it it opens to headaches and I don’t want headings all through the paper. How do I change it? Thank you Becky Sabo.
