For those of you who live in Aurora and are thinking about using the new
pilot transportation program Aurora Rides for those 60 and older, I want to
pass on a few tips to make the service easier to use.

Several of our chapter members have signed up for the limited service and
reported back to the chapter of our concerns.

First of all, the vehicles are high, making it difficult for some to get
into. Although they are ADA compliant, they are not wheelchair accessible.
They are a five-passenger van, much like a small suburban. The vehicles
make it difficult for those who are unable to raise their leg high enough to
enter the vehicle easily.

Secondly, there is a rule that only one grocery or shopping bag per person.
If you are taking a trip from the grocery store, this may not be the service
for you. Aurora has asked Via, the transportation provider to raise this
limit to two bags. As of yet, the one bag rule is in effect.

If you take Aurora Rides to a doctor appointment and plan a trip back home
before three, but the appointment goes longer than you planned and you
cannot get out before three, you need to find another way home, yourself.

This is a pilot program and they are working out the bugs. We will be
discussing the Aurora Rides service more at our chapter meeting this
Saturday and in the future.
