The City of Denver has simply invested too much money and time to modernize the mall for this service to simply disappear. My cynical nature suspects that RTD (Denver Regional Transportation District) is talking about this to stoke some fear into the community as it struggles to get out from under a huge budget deficit which has lasted for quite a few years (some might say, due to inept management).<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Is this an issue that we who are blind really need to be concerned about? As I see it, blind people would be no more or less unhappy than everybody else should the free mall ride actually be discontinued. Having other fixed routes and services eliminated would do a lot more harm to our community--especially since eliminating the free mall ride would have very little negative impact on paratransit.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Some people have asked if it would be reasonable for RTD to charge a fare for something that has been provided for decades at no cost to riders. Since I already pay my share fare for riding the bus and light rail, I personally would not feel that it is appropriate to object should RTD decide to charge the same fare for the mall ride as it does for bus and light rail transportation. While it was initially meant to travel between Longmont and Denver, just four stations have opened since construction began in 2012, with the line abruptly ending in Westminster. Last year, it recorded just 148,000 passenger boardings.
